I agree about feeling like an idiot. I finally caught on though due to the fact that I have been through enough CLEP exams to realize that some of the Peterson's questions are ridiculous. Sometimes I'll just look at a question and not bother to try to figure it out because I know that CLEP doesn't ask questions like it. Some are tricky, some split hairs, some are way too lengthy... many questions on the actual CLEPs are not that difficult. So I take the Petersons test (because it is the only way to get the answers) to use the answers as a way to get more information to study.
If I do okay on the Peterson test so much the better, but I got tired of the letdown when I thought I was not doing well because of how I did on Petersons.
Also, the Peterson's is only the per cent of what you got right - each question weighted the same. CLEP is scored in some other way - maybe taking into account the difficulty of the question, or comparing your results to others (maybe some others here know more), to get the mysteriously calculated number between 20 and 80.

so I was wondering if I should opt for the one w/Essay.

I remember reading that you should always go for the one with the essay. Anyone else get that advice?
