Hi,
I am going to "go for it" and brave the icky math-thing and get my BSBA from TESC. I was checking out the credit distribution to see what is the "absolutely very least" math requirement I can get away with and came across the Quantitative Business Analysis option.Does anyone on the board have any experience with this? I looked it up on TESC's website and read the course description but was wondering if any of you guys have practical experience with this class. Otherwise, what constitutes "precalculus mathmatics"? Does the CLEP Algebra meet this requirement? Thanks a bunch!

I took a similar course with Saint Leo Univeristy called 'Applied Decision Methods for Business.' I found the course easy enough, but it was because of how great the teacher was. I'd of had a much harder time otherwise.
From what I understand, you need to take the CLEP Precalculus in order to meet the Precalculus requirement. CLEP Calculus would also work. Everything else is not advanced enough to cover the requirement.

Aleks - an online tutorial/testing program offersmany different subjects. I am currently 80% completed in my pre-calculus program. It cost $20 a month i think until you complete. When you finish you can send your transcript to TESC and they accept this as credit math requirement. Search the board for the ALEKS discssion for a more detailed explanation of how it all works. It turned out to be a great option for someone like me who fail the clep pre-calculus miserably!
Hope this helps

How good are you at math? Do you have any recent algebra experience? If so, you might not find this as torturous as I did.
I took Intermediate Algebra (online class) as a pre-req to this class and also to satisy the req for natural science/math credits. If I hadn't taken the IA class, I'd have been in trouble for QBA. I did take QBA (online class). I liked some modules more than others. My mentor was awful. I had a great tutor. That made all of the difference for me. Taking this online, you are essentially teaching yourself advanced math. The time involved in this class is excruciating and when I tell you my assignments would average 20 - 30 pages in length some modules, I'm not exaggerating. In the end, I got an A in the class so it is doable, but it's not easy. Personally, I'd rather go through child birth without drugs all over again. That was only 23 hours of hell, QBA online was 12 weeks of it. For my stats requirement, I'm going to utilize ALEKS. I've heard the written assignments for stats online at TESC are just as demanding as they were for me for QBA. I might utilize the DSST for stats too, I haven't really made a decision just yet. I'm sorry if I was too harsh, but I just finished the class in June so the experience is quite fresh in my mind Good luck in whatever you decide to do! Wendy

Thanks for all of the great info/advice. As always, the forum comes through for me.
I think that I will have to go the old "ass in class" route for a couple of these subjects. But, after testing out of so many credits, it's kind of hard to imagine actually taking a class. Boy, we are spoiled here at IC huh? Thanks again everyone and have a super day.

Ha that's funny! That's how I felt about my online TESC African Lit class that just ended 2 weeks ago. I literally told my husband the same thing. Pure, sheer torture. That was 12 weeks of my life that I will never get back. I, too, got an A, but I fought for every point. Anyway, I never considered myself a "Math kind of person", but I would willingly try to do Calculus 4 over taking that class again.

Hi All,
I"m new here. I'm a TESC student and only have my last math requirement before graduation BSBA computer information systems. I have taken and dropped this class like three times and was considering the quantitative business analysis because the college says its easier but reading on this forum it sounds just as painful as precalc/business. Any other thoughts on the online course you folks talk about here? I'm so desperate and think its tutor time. |

FYI, when using ALEKS, once you're assessed at 70% or more (not the green 'learning mode' line, the blue 'assessed' line), you can consider the course complete and submit it through ACE for credit. ALEKS doesn't require you to hit 100% assessed, just 70%... - Lia

I took Quantitative Business Analysis because I failed the CLEP Precalc equivalent. (it's my only fail and hard for a CLEP test) I found QBA to be very time consuming, but not too difficult. It does require you to teach yourself as the only thing the mentor does is grade. I got an A. There is no midterm like most online classes from TESC and the final exam is online and open book.
That said, the other options brought up here may require less time and effort. I have no experience with them. I don't know the cost differences, so the biggest issue with QBA is the time spent. |
