Interesting.... DON'T mess w/academia, they are the LAW! As I stated in a previous post, the administrators were not happy with the arrangement when I called asking about it. That shouldn't come as a surprise. If your thinking about jumping onboard, do so quickly, the waters may start getting murky.

When I talked to the liason with FHSU in March, he gave the impression that they were trying to keep it a little quiet. They use it mostly to recruit new students and they make some money in the process -- $30 app fee plus what they earn for the course from SL.

I agree that it depends entirely on the rigor of the actual course. I personally found the college algebra course at SL to be excellent... in fact, much more excellent than my current online math class taught by a B&M institution. My current class at my B&M school has zero instruction (surprise!) and cost about seven times the price of SL algebra. When the semester ends, I'm probably filing a formal complaint. Meanwhile, I have no complaints about my SL class. I learned a lot and got college credit in the process.

I'm new to the SL issue (just read the Yahoo article). Do you think there's a chance the classes can be stopped and credit taken from those who earned it if they deem this unethical? I was thinking about taking their English and Algebra courses...

When you begin the SL courses, you will realize that they are rigorous. You have no choice but to learn the material. There are no shortcuts. The only people that would deem it unethical are people who are completely unfamiliar with the SL process, and those who believe that KISS was the greatest rock band ever.

And people who think that sitting in math lectures until your eyes cross (for maybe 10x the money), then worry about assignments when you already know the material -- that stuff builds character, right? It's not like college students have to deal with dangerous amounts of stress everyday. So what's another five or ten classes -- and another four to eight thousand dollars to worry about?



If anyone needs more proof how out of touch most college administrators are, here it is. My B&M advisor could learn a LOT from Jenifer DeHart at straighterline, and my current math instructor could learn everything from SL's college algebra course layout.
