    Hello Everyone,

On the track to complete my degree using Excelsior and I need 1 credit in Information Literacy, can anyone help guide me with this? Are there any tests or easy ways to pick up this credit?

    Thank you for the help,

    http://www.degreeforum.net/general-e...-1-credit.html

But to summarize that rather long thread... Penn Foster offers a 1-credit information literacy course. You take two 20-question tests online, and that's it.

    1. Get approval from your advisor to take Penn Foster ENG*103 to fulfill the information literacy requirement.

    2. Call Penn Foster to register for the course. Check the thread for the phone number, you don't want to call the main line because they'll claim you can't take individual courses. You can!

    3. Give the nice PF person your credit card info. The course is $90, materials included.

    4. Wait a couple hours. You'll receive an email with your student ID and login info. Login and set up your student account.

    5. While logged in as a student, you'll be able to download the course material - it's a .pdf, and includes the two sets of exam questions.

    6. Read the .pdf, which won't take long. Log into your student account, research the exam answers using PF's electronic library resources. Take the first test online. Take the second test online.

    7. You're done. Call Penn Foster to order a transcript to be sent to EC.

Now, you could take Excelsior's own information literacy course. It's $300. Save the $210 and take the Penn Foster version!

Like Perrik says, go for that PF course. I wish that I knew about it before I took the ripoff EC course for around $300. It is really stooopid that you must take this course prior to graduation. If they want to enforce it, it should be the first course that you take since it supposedly guides your research efforts.

EC only offers this course a few times per year, and I had to beg to get into a session that had already started. They told me that it would take a month or more to complete and that I might not have time to finish. It took me around 2 hours. They have to know that ppl with four years of college can complete this in a few hours, and that it is only being used as a money maker. It is kind of like a car dealer putting pin stripes on a car and asking another $300 dollars for something that you have no need for.

    Default Easy but expensive

I also had to take this course before I could graduate with my ASN. I did it in 2 days, but paid big bucks for the course from EC. By all means, anything cheaper and it compares, take it..

The one disadvantage to taking this through PF is getting through to Student Services! You must order transcripts over the phone, and it took eight calls before I spoke with a human.

She asked for the name and address of the recipient school, then laughed when I said it was Excelsior. They have EC's address memorized by now.

    1. IC is only $20 a month for as much studying for as many exams as you like.
    2. PF's info literacy course is a mere $90, and PF is great to work with
    3. Cheap courses and credit-by-exams are available via LSU, Ohio U, U of Idaho independent study, BYU, and others.
    4. Avoid the continuing enrollment fee by delaying enrollment at Excelsior until you're less than a year away from completing all your credits.
    5. Straighterline and ALEKS for math, FEMA for TESC Homeland Security credits.
    6. Many, many links to free online video lectures, outlines, quizzes, and textbooks.

There, how's that for a start? If it weren't for IC, I wouldn't be churning through the exams so efficiently, and almost certainly wouldn't be finishing up in time to avoid the yearly continuance fee (let alone in time to meet Spring 2010 application deadlines for grad school).

    Default go Penn Foster

First of all, I cannot stress enough how helpful this forum was and is. The advices I found here are the most valuable information.
I totally agree with perrik. I myself have completed Information Literacy from Penn Foster. There are couple of ways to get PF transcripts transferred to Excelsior. In my case I send them an email requesting the transcripts - got them in the mail 4 days later. Without opening I put the envelope back into another envelope and sent it to Excelsior. Another way is to register on the ACE website (https://www.acenet.edu/transcripts/) and add the completed courses to the Transcript Courses. Then order the transcripts from ACE to be sent to Excelsior ($40 registration which includes first order).

It is an easy course and a lot less expensive than Excelsior's.
