I take my exams at a small school and they obviously don't do this all that much (one time it took them 40 minutes to get me registered for one exam). The main woman was there when I passed my first and second exam and congratulated me, and then when I told her I wanted to take a third exam (they had the room reserved for me for another hour) she kept asking me if I was sure because there wasn't time for a break or anything. She left at noon, so when I got done at 12:20 there was another person at her desk and she had obviously been told there was a lunatic tester in the room because all she kept saying was 'wow' and 'you're so brave'. But honestly, it isn't bravery as much as that I just need to get this job done before I run out of motivation and get back in touch with my inner fears . I need to have that degree for the next step in my life and have spent so many years feeling like it would never happen that I don't want to go back to that place. I know for some people the 'slow and steady' approach works well, but I am petrified that I will lose focus if I don't go at this with guns blazing. Am I the only one that is afraid of sinking back into the apathy of feeling like the college opportunity passed me by and I can never catch up?

    Hi Johanna,

In the very beginning (last November), I knew I wanted to do this, but I was afraid that I might not go all the way and see it through to the end.

As a result, I purposely took a ton of exams in rapid succession during those first few weeks. I knew that if I invested enough time and money in the beginning, and if I got a lot of credits under my belt, it would encourage me to keep going. Apparently it worked, because here I am!

Regarding the reaction from your test center staff...

We sometimes forget JUST how amazing what we are doing is. My university test center typically gets college-age students in to take perhaps one or two CLEPs in total (usually to make up for failing a course). It is quite a phenomenon when someone like us comes in and takes dozens of exams over what is really a very short period of time, and sometimes even taking more than one exam per day. It blows their minds!

We are all doing the same thing here, so we pretty much take it in our stride when one of us passes yet another exam. But to 'others' outside our little peer group, it is almost inconceivable that we could actually pass so many exams in such quick succession. People fail these exams every single day. It is easy for us to lose sight of how MUCH we are accomplishing when we pass just ONE exam. It is not surprising that the uninitiated would be shocked when someone like you walks into their test center, and three hours later walks out with 21 college credits. As the dust from your whirlwind performance settles at their feet, they are left wondering what on earth they just witnessed. By the time it sinks in, you are already calling to schedule your next exam.

Let them look on in shock and awe! We really ARE achieving great things!

    Lest we forget,
    Snazzlefrag

    Good for you!!! That's awesome!

I took all CLEPS except for two DANTES, and I was fearsome when those envelopes came. (Snazzlefrag told me however that there would be music and a special glow eminating from my mailbox when they arrived, so I was less apprehensive after that...)

You must have heard a full orchestra with three successfull scores like that!

Good for you!! Did you take those all at the same time?
Either way, that is an amazing accomplishment!!

    Cheers

This post truly is a keeper...thank you!

My advisor's words when I told him what I was going to do in terms of testing out of needed electives...said, "well it would work in your plan; it's ambitious...Good luck!... (read "probably not going to happen"...)

HA...take that! It was all I needed to hear to bring out the, "I'll show them all" spirit!

It's true what you say. I've been thinking seriously about going into Adult Education for reasons connected with the idea that many people are unaware of what is possible without someone to guide them and cheer them on. It is so wonderful to see that life offers so many paths, and U-turns and whatnot.

We can be whatever we choose to be at any age we choose to be it.

    Nothing is set is stone.

    (50 next June!)
