Well, I just took the Public Speaking DANTES yesterday. YIKES! haha I read all the posts I found here on the forum. And I studied the resources many of you suggested. So thank you, thank you for that. I really do appreciate all the info and hints people provide! And, actually, my topic for the speech was not one of the ones on here. I had to support the position of a 12 month school year. They did not give me the option of being against it. And they also told me who my audience was. As for the multiple choice part. Like everyone else has said, know the different kinds of speeches, know the terminology. And you'll be all set. The best resource I used was The Art of Public Speaking I had actually bought a textbook, The Elements of Public Speaking, and I realized as I compared the contents of these two books, that they're very much the same. And this one is online and free. And really, you only have to read the summary of each chapter. They also have study questions and flashcards that were very helpful. So now comes the wait. We'll see.

Use the website I listed up above. If you know that, you should be ok for the multiple choice. This is a link to the other post I found helpful here on IC. http://www.instantcertonline.com/for...ublic+speaking No practices tests though so it's sorta scary going in there feeling like you have no clue as to how or what the test is going to be like. But it wasn't bad. Of course, I don't know if I've passed or anything yet. Make sure you write out outlines for sample topics. In that post I believe there are a few sample topics for public speaking. Then there was mine on the 12 month school year. Then there's whether or not condoms should be distributed in schools and should religion be taught in schools. So I went through and outlined them as they say you should for a persuasive speech. Which is, if you don't know, Purpose statement, thesis, introduction, body consisting of 3 or 4 paragraphs/topics that support your position, and conclusion. Then I practiced one or two of them (the more the better, I'd say). I was still so nervous. Remember not to use um's. It's better to just pause. Throw in a question. Use examples or stories if you can. I guess they like that. Just do your best.

Thanks! Really helpful ideas. Esp. the "um" hint. I like...um...have a bad habit of, like, saying "um" like when I'm...um...stuck on an idea.
Outlined plan as follows: 1.) Visit link 2.) Study needed topics; research good speech forms 3.) Write practice speeches on topics provided; practice writing outlines for maxium speed 4.) Bribe (first choice), nag (second) or force (last resort) any victim on the radar (i.e. parents, siblings) to listen to my speeches--welcome all critiquing! Any more ideas? Well, um ...thanks again! I feel the butterflies flittering away... |
