Smile Passed CLEP Info. Systems & Computer Applications

    Hello everyone!

I am excited because I passed CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications with a score of 77! I am surprised at my score, because computers is not my area at all!

I put this test off for a while because I am not good at computers and I don't like studying computers. Originally I was planning to take the CLEP, but when I found out that DSST Intro. to Computers was easier and satisfied the same requirement as the CLEP, I decided to study for it instead. My younger brother (who is a computer geek) took all three computer CLEP/DSST exams and said that the CLEP was the easiest (off course he did well on all three). Since he programs and codes websites for fun, I still wasn't convinced that the CLEP was easier (an exam of html, javascript, and C# would be easy for him - but not for me). I took a practice test for the DSST and scored 77 percent. Then I decided to take a practice test for the CLEP just to see how well I could do and scored 83 percent! That decided it!

I studied one of the recommended textbooks for the DSST and used internet resources. I found free-clep-prep.com to be a very good study resource. I took a while to study for this exam. I do usually tend to overstudy and like to make certain that I will pass, but since I am not good at computers I took even longer.

I found the exam to be easier than I expected and thankfully there wasn't much programming code. It seemed to cover much the same areas and information as what I was studying for the DSST. So both exams seem to have a lot of overlap.

My brother says that with that score I should do the other two computer exams as well. The DSST Intro. to Computers duplicates the CLEP at TESC, so I am not planning to take that, and I don't have any place in my degree to put the MIS, so I am not sure if I should take that either. Does anyone have any advice? Would the DSST MIS be useful to have on my transcript even if it does not fit in my degree? And how much overlap does it have with the CLEP; would it require much additional study?

It never hurts to have an extra course on the transcript. If you have the time I recommend that exam (it is upper level too!), make sure to check out the content for it since it differs slightly. Since you're already on free-clep-prep check out the page for it. I would say it has enough overlap to be well worth the time but I guess it depends if you want to take it or not.

You might also want to try the couple of sample questions for it:

    Thanks Cooperalex and Jmichelle.

I studied a little more (using free-clep-prep.com exclusively) and took a practice test for DSST Management Information Systems. I got 64 percent on the practice test. Then I took DSST MIS and scored 447!

I found that there was quite a bit of overlap between CLEP Computers and DSST MIS. But I did find DSST MIS harder.

I am still surprised, I did not expect to take more than the one easiest computer exam!

Good for you. I was going to warn you about the MIS exam. There were questions on that exam that I know but never learned in school. ETL for one thing. I just learned about it in 2007 and that means I was ignorant of this technology since my first tech job in 1993. Thats 14 years of professional IT exposure including CS courses that didn't prepare me for a question on the exam.
