    Default Graded CLEPs - Excelsior

I downloaded the latest Excelsior business catalog and student guide today.

I noticed that alot of the CLEPS which were given grades last year, are no longer graded. e.g. macro/micro economics and american lit.

Since I've enrolled last year, while the old policy was in effect, would I still get grades for these or would they now just be pass/fail?

I've already taken the econ tests (and received grades for them), but wanted to use the american lit as a GPA booster...

I got a "B" on CLEP Microeconomics because I took it last year. I asked Excelsior if they would give me a Pass instead; since it is considered a Pass/Fail exam now.

The answer I got was not only NO, but good-golly gee-willikers NO.

    Hi Auminer49r,

As your story confirms, it is the date you passed the exam that determines which policy is taken in regards to pass/fail or graded.

This is the same as when they change the cut-off scores for each grade on a specific exam. If you passed an exam back in July of 2001, it is the grading policy that was in effect (for that particular exam) in July of 2001 that would be applied.

    Hope that helps,

    Hi Bella,

If grad school is in your future, I would strongly recommend you choose DANTES over CLEPs wherever possible. This will create an adequate GPA record for your graduate admissions board to evaluate.

Most schools that want a GPA don't mind if you have pass/fails on your transcript, but will more than likely want to see at least 30 - 60 graded credits on which to evaluate your performance. Some stipulate that you have a certain GPA based on your undergraduate major, or based on the last 30 credits you earned etc.

Thus, it is essential that you research your grad admissions guidelines as early as possible into your undergraduate work so that you don't get blind-sided once you apply for your masters.

    Hope that helps,
