    Arrow Precalc dilemma

    This dreaded prereq.!!!
I thought I would CLEP this one but just do not feel strong enough. I checked into taking it at a local school but have to test into that course at most of the schools I called. This appears to be my biggest obstacle to move forward (Did I mention ?)
How did/would you handle this? Thank you, Marie

The first question I would have is what college are you seeking your degree from? If it is Excelsior, then you can take the College Algebra exam and fulfill your requirement. If it is TESC then you may need to bite the bullet and find an online course. Perhaps others would have that information.

I had precalculus as a requirement for my Excelsior degree and I tested out via the College Algebra CLEP and I had not studied any math for approximately 10 years. The College Algebra exam was not as difficult as I thought it would be. I scored a 55, which is not a great score but I only studied for about 5 weeks.

I don't know if this will help, but based on forum recommendations, I enrolled in the Penn Foster Technical Math 1 which qualifies for the College Algebra requirment needed for the Excelsior Business Degree. There are 6 tests and a final. I started today and have already finished 2 of 6 tests (open book, no time limit) with an 88 average. (Formulas and the Metric System) There is another category that looks very doeable and then the three Algebra specific sections.

The pros: Cheap $230 for both Technical Math and Infomation Literacy including materials, exams, and calculator!
Carefully explained concepts - short and sweet - very little fluff
Your final grade is based 2/3 on your (6) graded exams and 1/3 on your final proctored exam. So if you can do well on the (6) open book tests, then you will be in great shape heading into the proctored exam.

The cons: none that I can find

One tip is this, the proctored exam is based on all of your current classes. I also signed up for Information Literacy at the same time. So when I take the proctored exam, I will have two hours scheduled to take both the Technical Math and Information Literacy(one hour per test)tests. Here's the kicker....if I can plow through the Information Literacy in 20 minutes, then I can use the rest of the 1:40 for the Technical Math final. So I would take the Information Literacy at the same time if possible, which will give you bonus minutes to complete the Technical Math.

One other note...they do have a DHL option, so if you are in a hurry, you may consider that.

    Hope this helps!

    Default Penn Foster

I am also taking the college algebra/tech math course with Penn Foster you don't have to take the exams together you just pay an extra 20 and can take separate proctored exams but you get 1 hour. Hey, my syllabus has metrics as last I have three of the books formulas, algebra I, and Algebra II finished. I am also taking the financial management course and have completed all but the last lesson which I should be done with soon. I will take the proctored exam for this one first.

Sweet pie a la mode... There is hope!! Both the college algebra clep and Penn Foster are feasible options for me. Can't thank you enough and DO keep me posted about the finance exam/class as I also have to fulfill that requirement.

    Default statistics as well

Excelsior approved Penn Fosters statistics course as well, which I plan on taking after I finish Algebra if you need that. Since my accounting is over 20 years old and I have been told that the appeal never gets approved on the age and there isn't a managerial accounting exam anymore I plan on getting Penn Fosters managerial accounting approved and taking that as well. Next up for me after principles of finance & algebra will be the stats course and CSU Peublos - operations management course which I have approved as well.

What about Penn Foster for the Operations Management courses ?
    IET 113 or IET 237
Both are ACE Accredited and look like they would fit the bill

    Default Thanks

I didn't see those, the only question is whether it needs to be upper level or not, I have a lot of upper level ifsm courses already so it might work. I will send an email and see if they approve them. I was going to register for the csu course in the next week or so, so this is just on time.

I've uploaded the Penn Foster course catalog so you can view it and download by performing a "save as" to your computer

    www.securefileuploads.com/PFcoursecatalog.pdf

Go to page 60 in the catalog.

I went and checked the official ACE credit site and both courses are listed as currently awarding credit.

    IET 113 and IET 237

I emailed Excelsior but haven't heard back yet..... maybe you can get a quicker answer.
