The current Candidate Bulletin says "the use of a nonprogrammable, handheld calculator is permitted."

I used a TI-30Xa (basic nonprogrammable calculator) and only used 7 keys. You will need plus, minus, divide, multiply, 1/x, x^y and equals. As I guessed 2 months ago there is no need whatsoever for special financial functions if you memorize the 5 simple formulas in the last section of the IC material. You will , however, want to be able to quickly calculate exponents and reciprocals. Quick, what's 1/(1.06^30) ?

So, how did you get admitted with more than a 4 function calculator?

To me, the Candidate Bulletin is still either unclear or it clearly says 4 function only, which is just your most basic elementary school version.

p. 13 states, "Where calculators are allowed; only nonprogrammable, four-function, handheld calculators* may be used, NO EXCEPTIONS

**An approved calculator is any commercially produced calculator that is battery or solar operated, silent, handheld, nonprogrammable and does not have either a full alphabetic display or a graphical display.

Does a FOUR function allow for some of these other functions (1/x, x^y )?

I maintain that there is no commercially available four-function calculator (see my previous post in this thread).

I think you said it yourself right here. The clarifying asterisks on that same page say:


My calculator meets all of those criteria. Since they are more specific than the initial statement, I went by them. I also agree with barcotta in that I haven't seen a true 4-function calculator outside of a toy store. The last one I saw was enormous and red, with buttons the size of a half dollar..
