I got a free Human Growth and Development textbook (Development Through the Lifespan I think) on freecycle.com in my local area. I used it to prepare along with the official CLEP guide. I didn't use instantcert back then. I have 4 children and am a childbirth educator, so I had some "experience" with various questions on the exam- that always helps. What was totally new to me were the people. At that point in time, I hadn't heard of the main players in sociology and psychology. You'll need to learn them (in fact, they'll show up again on all your exams in this category: sociology, psychology, educational psych, soc and history). Seems like everyone has a stage, phase, and theory.

The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” Randy Pausch |
