    Default Wer?

Hey folks, can someone answer this one for me? I know English CLEP with or without Essay (I did them both) will satisfy WER at Excelsior, but what about the DANTES Technical Writing? I passed that too! Please tell me I’m not going to have to do another English test…

    Thank you, drkjon

    drkjon,

None of the DANTES or CLEP English exams will fulfill the Written English Requirement (WER) at Excelsior. Instead, you must take an Excelsior exam, a TECEP (Thomas Edison State College) exam, or take an Excelsior-approved course to fulfill this requirement.

Also, Excelsior will not apply more than a total of six credits of English Composition towards your degree. If you take a 3-credit course to fulfill your WER, and then also pass the 6-credit CLEP English Composition exam, you will only be allowed to apply three of the six credits earned for the CLEP. Furthermore, if you also then passed the 6-credit CLEP Freshman College Composition exam, you would not be allowed to use ANY of those credits since you would already have reached the six credit maximum.

Hope that helps to clarify it,
    Snazzlefrag

    Default Did the same thing....

I took technical writing and the Clep English comp w/o essay. In the end I had to face down the dreaded ECE test. Boy howdy did that one suck! It got me my 6 credits though with a "C".
    Good luck.

    On a related note,

Does anyone know, or can an enrolled Excelsior student try to find out, if Penn Foster's English Composition course (Eng 100, ACE#: ICS-0194) will fulfill the WER? It has been ACE approved since June 2007.

I would VERY much appreciate if someone could find out the answer for me (either from your own experience, or by confirming with your Excelsior advisor).

If it IS approved by Excelsior to fulfill their WER, this would be an excellent option since there are no proctored or timed exams, and all textbooks are included in the price ($55/credit).

Hopefully someone will come back with an answer for me/us soon.

    Thanks,
    Snazzlefrag

You're right Shoto - it is definitely accepted, according to Christine Foley in the Business office. She said it is in their computer as an approved course for the WER requirement.

    Better get busy Snazz.

That's good enough for me! Thanks for confirming it.

I think I'll be taking this course in the near future. It's got to be one of the most affordable ways to fulfill the WER without taking an in-the-seat community college class.

    Thanks again you two,

Thank you everyone for great responses. You know how it goes...going to SIU and they say CLEP without essay was good, and then years later TESC says need CLEP with essay...and technical writing too! And now for Excelsior none of those Exams will suffice... Not blaming Excelsior...I should have finished my degree earlier, but it would be nice to not have to triple/quadruple the effort.

    Thanks again, drkjon

    I hear you,

I have six credits for CLEP English Comp with Essay, and six more credits for CLEP Freshman College Comp. But I STILL need to fulfill Excelsior's WER. When all is said and done, I will have amassed 15 English Comp credits. But only SIX of those will apply at Excelsior.

    Oh Well! Just keep swimming,
