    Default Newbie Needs Help!

    Hi,

I'm interested in taking some of the CLEP/DANTES exams to move my degree along; my college will allow half of the needed credits to be earned through exams. My problem is that, although I met with an advisor (who was not helpful at all), I'm still unsure about what exams would be given credit for what courses. How did you know what exams would qualify for credit for courses that you needed to take?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Ann

    Hi Ann,

WELCOME! It's too bad you had a bad experience with an advisor Maybe you can find a different advisor(?) I didn't like the first one I spoke with and so subsequently, I just never made appointments with her. When I found a guy I liked, I just always asked for him.

Regardless, here's a suggestion which might make sense to you....
Go to the 'Exam Specific' forum and read postings for exam subjects that you think might interest you. Determine if, based on what you read (and have some general interest in) whether it's a test you would like to take. If so, add it to your 'potential test' list. Then you can hit an advisor with a list all at once. You really want to avoid heavy back & forth with advisors if possible... use them when needed but don't overuse (if that makes sense).

Some schools have a printed list of all CLEP and DANTES and the codes and names of the corresponding classes. Much of this info is usually available in your school's catalogue. What school are you with?

    Good luck!

I'm the king of procrastination. I first submitted my app to TESC in 1993. THIS will be the year of my degree completion!

    PASSED:
    CLEP-Information Systems & Computer Applications: Scored 62; Nov 07
    CLEP-Analyzing & Interpreting Literature: Scored 57; Feb 08
    DANTES-Criminal Justice: Scored 54; Jan 08
DANTES-Fundamentals of College Algebra: Scored 47 (and 47 is the req'd pass score! ); Jan 08
    DANTES-Drug & Alcohol Abuse: Scored 57; Feb 08
    DANTES-Ethics in America: Scored 55; Feb 08
    DANTES-Organizational Behavior: Score 54; Mar 08
    DANTES-Technical Writing: Score 58; Mar 08

FELL SHORT OF A PASSING SCORE (I'll never say the 'F' word):
ECE-Organizational Behavior: Score D (but passed DANTES version 2 hours later! )

    Smile College Advisors

Sometimes I have found that advisors don't really push any of these tests because it takes money away from their particular institution. When I met with an advisor one time, he really tried to push me away from taking too many of the tests. The problem is, if you want to take the tests and you fail one like I did, then they almost always encourage you to take the course after that. My feeling is that college is so expensive and if I can save some money taking a CLEP test as opposed to a course and I'm able to do it, then I will. The second time I took the test I passed it and ignored my advisors suggestion. CLEP exams can help you get through college quicker and why should you sit in classes or do work online for courses that you would rather CLEP? Just stick to it and I know you will do well. This Instant Cert Academy is a great way for you to study. It's really helping me!
