Unhappy Trying to get Motivated - have questions....

    Hey everyone!

I was supposed to start taking a number of DANTES exams last summer and due to some family issues, some serious burnout, a bout of depression and a LOT of procrastination needless to say I still haven't taken a single exam.

So I figured I would put myself on the spot and just schedule the first one and then I would be FORCED to study. I am scheduled for Mar 28 to take the Princ. of Supervision exam. I have already take a number of mgmt courses, so I feel I should do ok with a little study.

Anyway, I have been reading the forums trying to get motivated to study and realized I have a few questions regarding the process.

1). It's better to guess than not answer at all right? Am I correct in my understanding that there is no penalty for wrong answers, just credit for correct ones?

2). Does anyone know what the time limit is for Intro to Supervision? Is it the same for all DANTES exams?

3). Is it true that if you take a computerized exam, it tells you whether you passed or failed immediately upon completion? If so, does it give you a score?

I have been working on my degree on and off for 20 years now. I only have the following classes/exams to take:

    Intro to Supervision
    Money and Banking
    Organizational Behavior
    Human Resources Mgmt
    Business Law
    Business Policy

Plus one more business elective...haven't figured out a class/exam to fill this spot yet. With only 7 more to go, shouldn't I be psyched and ready to go? Instead I am completely disinterested and procrastinating. I figured after giving myself a break, I would be good to go. Anyone else having problems staying motivated in the "home stretch"?

Scheduling that exam was an EXCELLENT step!! Good for you. You'll do just fine on the Supervision test.

    1. Yep -never leave anything blank.
    2. Time limit should be 90 minutes for on-line. (I think)
    3. Yes- on-line gives immediate results.

I definately struggle with procrastination. I posted (on my wall) the list of tests I still have to take -- and the month I'm going to take them. It encourages me that I'm almost there! I think after you pass the Supervision test -- you'll get a BIG boost of encouragement and be excited about passing another one. You can do it!

    Default immediate results ?

So I will get a number score after taking the exam? Not just pass/fail? I need a 46 for TESC to accept the credit.

Thanks for the encouragement... I am hoping just that... by forcing myself to take the exam and hopefully passing, it will motivate me to take the rest. I just paid another year's tuition in Dec and have already wasted Jan...not to mention the second half of last year..... stupid... waste of money I don't have too. I hope to finish up everything this year if for no other reason than so I don't have to pay tuition again.

    Being on the "20 year plan" s*cks. I wish I had completed this when I was younger...before the job....the house...the kids...the renovations....etc. etc etc.

I also wish I had looked into DANTES/CLEP sooner. I didn't really know what it was about until last year and I had already done 2 years at TESC doing expensive and labor intensive online courses. It's amazing how few people know of this faster route towards credit.

    Rachel,
I was exactly the same way with the procrastination. In fact, I first submitted my application to TESC in 1993!! IMO, You made the right move - schedule the exam and then force yourself to be ready by test day. Read my signature file and look at the dates... proof that this way works well!

Online exams are 2 hours but my experience has been that it's far more than enough time for most exams (although I would have been happier if they gave me FOUR hours for the algebra!) Yes, you get a your result before getting out of your test chair when taking online exams, but few locations offer them online. I drive an extra 1 hour to go to an online testing center because I refuse to wait for weeks for my results... what a torture that would be!!

If you haven't joined instantcert yet (paying), do so asap so that you will have access to their practice tests... that's been almost my exclusive source of study! Note: as you'll see everyone saying here... "A pass is a pass!" I'm not trying to be Superman with my scores!

Always check and follow the guidelines on the FACT SHEET for each exam. For your exam, it's here.

Best of luck on your first! I haven't taken this particular yet but I understand the pass rate is high - just relax, go through InstantCert thoroughly, read the 'Exam Specific' thread for your exam, and remember that
CANCELING YOUR EXAM APPT IS NOT AN OPTION!

By the way, a HUGE benefit of doing the DANTES online vs pencil/paper is that all results are kept in your account and you can go see all your tests (ever taken) and results at any time! The first time you take an online Dantes, you will create a username and password. After that test, your username and p-word will always be used to take tests (no need to re-enter your personal info every time you take a test cause you are logging in and testing through your account!)

I can see all my results by logging in here .

    GettinMyBA,

Thanks, I don't plan on cancelling it....I just hope I can get motivated enough to study. I am a paying member of IC, actually been paying for quite some time...wasting more money with my procrastination.

I went through the all of the questions for the exam and created a study guide for myself, printed out the pretest, overview info, the practice exams from two different sources. It's all bound neatly...all organized and ready to go....and it has been sitting on my desk like that for almost a year!

Where are you getting your degree from?

The username stuff would be helpful since I have to take more than one exam....7 if TESC will accept that many.

How was the Info Sys & Comp Apps exam? What kind of material did it cover? Is it the same as Mgmt Info Sys?

Somebody (no clue who) once said that

If you continue to do things as you've always done them, you can expect the same results you've always had!

Take a minute to think about how profound that really is in your situation, then go bust your notes out of their neat little binding. Put some pages in the kitchen, some near the toilet, some by your bed. Normally disorganization as I'm suggesting is not good advice, but doing things in a nice organized manner hasn't worked for you, HAS IT?!?! Tough love.

My degree will be from TESC... just have to deal closely with your advisor because different programs can work differently.

The hardest part is staying motivated, not allowing anything or anyone to side track you. That has been my biggest challenge.

    GettinMyBA,

Your are too funny! I actually couldn't leave paperwork laying around the house... tends to make me a little crazy... then I would start on a cleaning frenzy and never study....besides I have a 110 lb - 8mth old puppy who would find them very tasty!

I get your point though.... I'm getting started... have 1 hour until the kids get home...if my office phone stays quiet, it will be a good start.

You're at TESC too? I have been in contact with my advisor... I actually just sent him an email asking him a few more questions. How long did it take for your Dantes/Clep credits to hit your academic eval?

Thanks so much for your help.

    Rachael
