I recently took the spanish clep and recieved a 50 for it...only 4 credits. A 66 at my college scores you 12 credits. This is a pretty tough feat and i wish there was an 8 credit score but i don't think there is....it's either 4 or 12.

I actually took 5 semesters or Spanish in high school, i recieved a B overall in AP spanish which actually was still considered an A becuase it was AP.

I took the test and found it to be very hard....i had had no spanish for over a month and hadn't really reviewed at all in that time so going into it i know i wasn't prepared. However still...the listening section i thought was very hard as i tried to translate everything as they spoke and that didn't work. I think i could do a different approach and try to pick out words especially after immersing myself in more authentic speaking which my class didnt cover well enough.

The reading section was a little tricky but nothing a little review on my basics wouldnt have helped becuase i hadn't done that. However i just bombed the listening and thats what got me.

What do you guys recommend i do to be ready to retake the test 6 months from now to go for the 12 credit shot..? My college wont require me to take any Spanish classes this year which will be nice since i have those 4 credits.

I thought i was pretty good at spanish but i will be placed in Spanish 002 at this rate which sure will be easy but probably a waste of time and money. A 66 will be hard i know....i REALLY wish i could test out of 001 and 002....but i need an AP test for that

those tests clep spanish and french are not hard, they are tricky, I took both of them and scored a 79 and 80 and got 24 credits in just one saturday , they go very fast and for all the audio part it doesnt allow you to replay, they give you 4, 5 sentances consecutively without any possiblity to replay(more like a cheap memory test combined with the difficulty to understand a foreign language) and then ask you some shabby tricky questions, so my suggestion for you is that next time before you start the test, ask them to provide you pen and paper(if they ask why say I need to write the sentence to check the structure to see if it looks right ) and try to take super quick notes while you listen, that should get you to 66 without any problem if you have a decent spanish level. again hard vs tricky not the same, these tests are tricky so watchout !!

So, you want to replace your test. I think you might have 4 options.

1) Just curious, why didn't you take the AP test? Is it too late? That would be my first suggestion. Colleges will take an AP scores over CLEP scores for sure. What do you need on your AP test to earn more than 4 credits? A score of 3 might be doable with study, but scores of 4 and 5 are no small feat. "If" you scored a 4 or 5, would you get 12 credits?

2) I don't know if you can test another CLEP to replace a lower score- that is something you'll have to investigate with your college. It's worth asking, but you'll still have to wait 6 months. On the bright side- you have time to study.

3) There is an ACE-evaluated New York foreign language test....maybe someone can recall enough info to point you in the right direction. I don't know much about it, but I hear it awards big credit for solid scores...can someone help on this??!!

4) College placement exam at your school. You can cancel your Spanish score and start from scratch.

CLEP and other tests are a true gift, and have helped COUNTLESS people (including myself) earn loads of credit. But, nothing is without work. This is why I always cringe at the "took the test cold" threads. Good luck as you study for your next exam!
