I just received a detailed description for the revised psych requirements. It's too long to post here, but if you pm me your email address I'll send it on to those interested. These will take effect Jan 1, 2007.

Having now read the new requirements for the Psychology major (effective for anyone who enrolls Jan 1st, 2007, or later), it appears that there will be two key areas that can no longer be fulfilled via exams:

1) History and Systems/History of Psychology/Psychological Foundations.
2) Biological and Physiological Foundations
(Biopsychology, Physiological Psychology, Animal Behavior, Comparative Psychology, Perception, Sensation, Neuroscience).

All other requirements can be completed by exam (see below). The major still requires 30 credits (at least 15 upper level).

Here is one possible path to completing all but two of the new requirements via examination:

I. Core Requirements:

A. General Psychology (CLEP Introductory Psychology)
B. Statistics (DANTES Principles of Statistics)
C. Research Methods/Experimental Psychology/Experimental Design (ECE Research Methods in Psychology)
D. History and Systems/History of Psychology/Psychological Foundations (No exam available)

II. Intermediate and upper level courses in central knowledge areas or sub disciplines of psychology, including a minimum of one course in each of the five areas from among the following:

1) Biological and Physiological Foundations (No exam available)
2) Developmental Perspectives (CLEP Human Growth, or DANTES Lifespan Development, or ECE Lifespan Development)
3) Social Influences (ECE Social Psychology)
4) Abnormal Psychology (ECE Abnormal Psychology)
5) Cognitive Bases (CLEP Educational Psychology...assuming they will still accept it under their new policy)

III. Electives (as needed):
(You will need to make sure you have a total of at least 15 upper level credits)

DANTES Organizational Behavior, or ECE Organizational Behavior.
ECE Foundations of Gerontology.
ECE Psychology of Adulthood & Aging.

Hello everyone,

Just in case there may be someone out there who is not able to matriculate with Excelsior before the new year I thought it might be helpful to repost this message from SimonTam. I looked at several of the links last night and in case someone needs to take a class instead of an exam both the history psych and the physiological can be taken for approx. $140-$200 a credit. You can search this site and find the working links on Simon's thread titled, " Places to get college credit without enrolling in the school. I would have just listed the schools that are offering these classes but neglected to make note of them last night and am too time pressed to do it today. I'll try to narrow this down better for people later.

The classes I looked at could generally be worked at your own speed and had 2 to 3 exams that could be locally proctored. The big thing that is a relief to me is that a person could take one of these courses for not much more than some of the more expensive exams and could still have the flexibility of their own schedule.

Anyway, hope this is a help to someone.

Hi all,

I've seen a couple of people ask what to do if they have to take a college course that is not offered in a test or by the school in which they are enrolled. In most instances, you would probably have to go to a local school and enroll as a transient student. However, there are schools that offer web-based and correspondence courses for open enrollment for college credit. Some of these don't even require the student to go through the school's admission process. Just sign up for the class and pay tuition and books. Also, these correspondence courses are many times charged as IN-STATE tuition even if you don't live in the same state as the school. Many of these schools are the state-funded colleges and Universities. These aren't degree mills presenting watered-down classes. Anyway, I present this list to the board as general information for the members.
