    Default Foreign Language Proficiency Exam

    Hello,

Can you please tell me if TESC accepts

    1) NYU Foreign Language Proficiency Exam . Proficiency Testing - Foreign Languages | New York University - SCPS

    2) American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Exams. They are also ACE Credited. Do they accept them RAW or do i need to send Transcripts from ACE. ACTFL Certified Proficiency Testing Programs (oral and written) - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

If yes how do they award the credit's and in what category do they fall .. I mean Humanities , social science or general education requirement's. I am looking forward for BSBA in Computer Information Systems . Thomas Edison State College | BSBA in Computer Information Systems Credit Distribution .

Also I would be testing myself in 2 languages. Hindi and Punjabi. would they count them as 2 subject area's or just 1.

    Regards,

    Reshab

    Reshab,
    I'm impressed

In any event, I can only answer part of your questions. The credits will be considered humanities, and anything ACE evaluated will count for sure.

All foreign language is one subject, so you'll still need a second subject; but, you are required to take a 3 credit communications, so that will be fine. The excess foreign language credit can overflow into your general education electives (9 cr) so in theory, you can probably use up to 18 foreign language credits if my math is correct. Additionally, if you cap out, they can overflow into your free electives...so any way you slice it, I think your in a win-win situation and you can probably earn up to 27 before you're full.

As to "how" you get the credits (raw or transcripted by ACE) is a question for advising.

Foreign language is an excellent way to earn credit, even the CLEP exam can award up to 12 credits per language. I wish I had the ability!

    Thanks Queen Jennifer
you have answered it into a better way than the ppl in TESC who want me to enroll first before they could help me with anything. Anyway's I read in TESC catalog 2007 that they do accept NYU exams. and the advantage with NYU is they have 16 credit exams whereas ACTPL just has 12 credit exams. but one more difference. NYU has it for oral, listening and writing with essay. whereas ACTPL just has an oral interview to give.
I donno know if anyone has encountered any of these Exams.
    If someone Please reply.
    again Thanks

Default request to TESC, Excelsior and COSC enrolled students

    Hello

I have a request to make to the enrolled students if you could check with your course advisors

In regards to the HINDI and PUNJABI Foreign Language Proficiency Exams (NYU and ACTFL) if they will duplicate or not. The ACTFL is covering the oral/speaking piece of the foreign language and the NYU exam covers the written ,listening and translation pieces of the foreign language.
Proficiency Testing - Foreign Languages | New York University - SCPS
ACTFL Certified Proficiency Testing Programs (oral and written) - American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

and also in what category do they fall .. I mean Humanities , social science or general education requirement's

Please check with your course adviser's ... as they are not willing to answer me until I enroll . and I will be enrolling considering who will award me maximum credits for the foreign language's I know.

Thanks guys and I will really appreciate your help.

Humanities- reread what I wrote about how credit and credit overflow works a couple posts up.
Also, two tests of the SAME language will certainly duplicate credit. Different languages provide different course numbers- thus different credit.

I think what you are asking is appropriate, but you need to check with ACE instead of TESC. TESC will follow ACE recommendation- so just simply look and see who awards the most credit for each test, and then give it a go!

    Dear Jeniffer,
someone in the other post has stated that Excelsior is accepting both CLEP and ACTPL without duplication ( FRENCH) . because CLEP is written and listening whereas ACTPL is speaking. and he have done that. even he had also posted the email from course adviser from Excelsior.

But as the languages in which i want to do ( Hindi and Punjabi) is not in CLEP , but in NYU ( which is written , listening and translation) (not ACE approved) (also NYU doesn't give credit's themselves.. accepting colleges should) and ACTPL ( speaking ) ( ACE approved) so am curious what's their policy on these two exams.

Thanks and Hope I made myself clear.

this is the most Stu.. lets stay polite lets say ''least smart'' choice you could make , NEVER EVER chose your future college because of 4 humanities credits more or less which will end up going into your general edu elective, Its not worth it, look at the big picture, see which school will give you more U/level credit for your area of study, how many free elective you can fill up with fema, how much is going to cost you and how long its gonna take to wrap up the whole degree, is there any extension period available without paying another year of tuition and fee etc.. those are some of the points you should focus on, not 4 credits more or less in Punjabi you can take a sociology and astronomy with less than a day of study for both and get 6 credit just like that, and imagine an employer or future school who will take a look at your transcript and find out that you filled up most of your gen edu elective with Hindi and Punjabi compared to another guy who took psychology, US history, sociology, political science etc.. guess who will get the Job ??

    Reshab,
Take one and get it evaluated when you pay your $75 application fee.
Honestly, I don't believe that someone got duplicate credit. Sorry, I just don't believe that it's possible- no matter what the test asked. There has to be more to the story that is missing. Also, don't take an exam that IS NOT ACE evaluated until you are enrolled, that could be a mistake. You need that confirmed by an advisor. Just take the test that is ACE evaluated for now.

I disagree with the previous poster regarding which courses you use to fill your gen ed electives for an undergrad degree. He implies certain under grad gen ed electives might give you a leg up in a job interview. No one cares. When is the last time an interviewer asked you if you took psych101? Answer- never. Master's courses? Sure- choose wisely. Undergrad electives? That's about as likely as being asked what electives you took in high school.
