I ordered the REA CLEP Study Guide for Freshman College Composition yesterday. I should have it within the next couple weeks or so seeing as how it had to be shipped overseas to Italy. English has always been my best subject and I was just going to order the test and take it blindly, but the wife suggested otherwise. I don't want to pay for instantcert, peterson's or anything else that cost money. Any other suggestions for free study guides, flash cards, reference material, or any other advice would be great.

If you don't want to pay for the Peterson's tests why not take them free?

You don't want to pay for InstantCert??? It really is worth it...
If you can pick up a copy of The Elements of Style (finding it at a library in Italy might be difficult), that would be capital. It gives useful helps. I'll have to ask my mom to post the free Peterson's tests she found. That would be an excellent aid. BTW Do you have the Official CLEP Guide? It generally isn't that expensive and has one compact quiz for each of the 34-odd CLEP exams.

Hi all,
I just found out today that there has been a change in policy at Excelsior regarding accepting the Freshman English Composition CLEP for an AS or AA degree. I started in 2007 and then had a break in enrollment for a few months before paying my registration fee and they made me start all over as a new student under new program requirments. According to Excelsior they cannot give partial credit for a CLEP exam. That means that if the English Comp CLEP is a 6 unit clep you either get 6 units or nothing. Here is the advisors reply; There have been a number of changes to the degree plans since you originally enrolled in 12/2007. Because you went withdrawn, your new policy date has changed to reflect your new enrollment date. You are now bound to the policies in place as of 6/09. The difference it makes in your case is this.......when you enrolled in 2007 we were able to split the CLEP Composition exam and award 3 credits in the Humanities. The reason we could only award 3 is because you still had to take 3 credits to meet the Written English Requirement, and 6 credits is the most you can have in composition. Per State Ed. policies, we can no longer "split" the CLEP exam into 3 credits (it is a 6 credit exam). So, that State Ed. policy coupled with our policy of "capping" composition courses at 6 credits means that we can not give credit for the CLEP exam. If I did give credit for that exam (6 credits), then you take a course to meet the Written English Requirement (3 credits) you would be at 9 credits in composition and we cannot do that. The only way that you can be awarded the 6 credits for the CLEP exam is to take an "advanced" writing course to meet the Written English Requirement. An advanced writing course would not apply to the "cap", and would free up the 6 credits in composition - to be filled by the CLEP exam. If you want to consider that, then the course you would want to take is called ENG*201 Writing for the Professions. You cannot take ENG*101 because it would fall under the cap and you would then lose the CLEP exam completely. Sincerely, (Advisor name removed)
