There is a thread in the general forum about age of entrance to the "big 3" but I wanted to post this here since we have a poll about homeschool.
I know some of you are homeschooled high schoolers. I am a homeschool mom to 4 kids. If you are taking CLEPs, DANTES, or APs (and passing) be sure your parent lists your high school courses as "College Prep" or in the case of AP tests as "Advanced Placement." Every CLEP/DANTES/AP exam should identify a course you completed. Don't miss any!! You will need to have a transcript, and this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE feather in your cap! Don't leave it out. Here is an EXAMPLE using Psychology as an elective. (your transcript may vary based on your state law or your parent's opinion....one in the same )Transcript: Basic Psychology .5 credit *multiply by 1 for GPA (if you passed the CLEP Psychology exam) College Prep Psychology .5 credit *multiply by 1 for GPA (if you passed the CLEP psych and edu psych) Introduction to Psychology 1 credit *multiply by 1 for GPA (if you passed AP psych with a 3 or higher) AP Psychology .5 credit *and multiply by 1.5 for GPA (if you passed AP psych with a 3 or higher and both psych CLEPs) AP Psychology 1 credit *and multiply by 1.5 for GPA

Dixiegirl,
I know you are taking CLEPs, are you taking any APs also? Just wondering how they compare subject-wise/difficulty,etc.

Hm. Thanks for that, but I graduated high school before I started CLEP. So would these rules not apply then?

Kali, If you already graduated from high school, you should already have a transcript. I'm guessing your parents already did this for you?

Hi Jennifer, I am a homeschooling mom of 3. One married son. His twin, almost 25, works full time, has 80 credits, CLEP, DSST, towards his BSBA at TESC and worked with College Plus the 1st year (before we knew about IC!) My 3rd son, starting last year of high school, is hoping to get a full scholarship to the local business school (wants to be a CPA). He just scored 33 on the June ACT and the qualifying required score is 31. Studied with books from the library - alot of work - and used ALEKS.com for brush up math. I am serving as facilitator for both guys, read the forums, give tips, suggest study plans, find resources, used books, etc. to save them time and money. Son #3 took 3 APs this past May. (Statistics, Macro and Micro). Passed 2 with 3s and got a 2 on Macro (having it rescored - just in case - have heard stories that it might be worth a try.) If he doesn't get a 3 on the rescore - he will take the CLEP. Why did we do this? So he could try to earn the title AP Scholar (3 passed AP exams) to give another kudo in the quest for the full time scholarship. How did they compare to the Micro and Macro CLEPs the other son took? MUCH, MUCH harder!!! We pretty much devoted 6 weeks to work on all 3 APs using many of the IC recommended materials. But the free response questions are a killer. If you don't have a regular class, only self-study, to me - it seems difficult to have to draw graphs and squares, etc. Maybe AM Government, Psych, and even US Hist are easier. There is a good site to follow discussion on these matters that I found a bit late - College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential As a side note, when son #3 finished the ACT, he took all the corresponding CLEPs (college math the same day). Within a week or two - English Comp with Essay and Analyzing and Interpreting Lit. It just made sense to do these now. Also, to give a boost he quickly (1 per week) took the Marketing and Management CLEPs. We're going to hold off a bit now until I can learn more about financial aid. He will complete 'high school' pre-calculus through ALEKS and be poised to get the ACE/TESC credit - if necessary. If the full ride doesn't come through - he will go the TESC/CBE route to finish his bachelors. Then move on to grad school to finish preliminary requirements for the CPA. Either way, at the very least, he will be ready to enter the business college as a junior. Our plan is to spend $1300 (the cost of ONE brick and mortar class) on 15 CLEP tests – which will give him 54 credits = $25 / credit hour - BEFORE he enrolls in any needed traditional courses. And he can bypass the gen ed and general business required core, and begin with his major course of study. |
