Well....I heard back from University of Adelaide, and I am accepted into the Masters of Arts in Gastronomy program for Feb 2009 start! This has taken forever, I applied back around March 1st, and it turns out that there was a glitch which didn't allow my application to be processed. I had to send everything all over again last month- but I got my acceptance letter today! This program was my first choice....then I started getting anxious about earning a degree outside of the USA.
So, I applied to another college, the University of Illinois. It has a more competitive admission process...so we shall see what they have to say about only 33 graded credits. UI is shorter by almost a year, cheaper by $9K, and in my home state. My brother is an alumni, but there is a name recognition that would come with graduating from that program. It offers the same program on the ground as well as globally, which removes the automatic stigma sometimes associated with the distance learning method. You would not necessarily know the delivery method used. The only down side, is that it really isn't my field....it's on the fringe of my field. (shhhhh...I would like to do both.....) Anyway, they have had my application for a while now too. All the waiting can make a person crazy!! SO, I just wanted to share a bit of my good news- especially in an answer to those who wonder if you can get into grad school with only a limited number of graded credits.

Cinderly, THANKS! I am in a terminal field, so actually the associate degree is it. Beyond that, you have to be creative about ways to complement what you do. Most chefs go into business programs for their bachelors. A couple bachelor degree tracks in America are geared for chefs, but only 1 is RA (not at a distance and way too expensive) and the NA programs are decidedly management focused. I already knew about the gastronomy program BEFORE considering a bachelor degree, so I chose the social science option from the start; a much better fit for me as a teacher. Talk about putting the cart before the horse! I do aspire to earn a PhD...but there are so many millions of hours between now and then- that I don't want to say that out loud ![]()
