I have a Linked In profile, it is very popular in my industry (web development) and has helped me to get work. I highly recommend setting up a profile and getting as many recommendations from supervisors and clients as possible. What happens is someone who is looking to fill a position may know one or more of your connections and can then "check you out". Also helpful to join industry groups and answer questions. I think in time the site will become better known outside the tech world.
