1/2 the CLEP exams just revised
#21
Here’s a screenshot from Facebook by Modern States that explains what happened, they say the test certifications were just extended not changed.

Modern States social media person is wrong.

Anyone can look it up.

If it was just extended, then it would have just added additional time to the current time period.

For instance, you can see that several of the exams show 3 time periods:

 - American Government shows 3/1/96-6/30/01; 7/1/01-11/30/18; and 12/1/18-11/30/23.

 - American Literature shows 3/1/96-6/30/01; 7/1/01-2/28/15; and 3/1/15-12/31/22.

 - College Algebra shows 3/1/96-6/30/01; 7/1/01-12/31/06; and 1/1/07-12/31/20.

So if American Government did not change at all on 12/1/18, then the time would have just been extended.  Instead, you can clearly see that Am Gov't was changed on 7/1/01, and again on 12/1/18.  While Am Lit was changed on 7/1/01, and again on 3/1/15.  And College Algebra changed on 7/1/01 and 1/1/07.

The changes may be minor or major, but if there was no change, then they would not have made a distinction between the years, they would have just extended the current one.

As such, we can assume that 1/2 the CLEP catalog (16 exams) were just revised and are "significantly different" than the earlier editions.

The little mouse in the back of my head is wondering how this will play into Modern State's program.

The last couple that I took had a different User Interface, so I wondered if they'd been updated.

Do you mean the questions or answers themselves felt like different? Like different wordings or something? Did you score about as you expected to anyway?

Just curious about this, since I was hoping to take one more exam before Christmas, but it is one of the updated ones and I don’t want to be unprepared or caught off guard if I can help it.
The wording and questions all seemed like my other tests. I didn’t notice any difference in that regards, although I didn’t know the test had changed at the time. The look of the test was a little different, but it didn’t change the actual format or navigation of the test.

I took two tests - Social Sciences and English Lit. It seems like the SS was not updated and the Eng Lit was based on the link. I was very surprised by the questions and percentage of topics for the SS, but I’m guessing that was more my fault in not understanding the breakdown. I honestly thought that was the one that was changed. I thought I had failed or just barely passed, but I ended up passing by a large margin. I’m still not sure how that happened!  The English Lit seemed to stick to the breakdown of topics that were there before.  If anything, it seemed slightly more geared towards analyzing and interpreting than the breakdown stated. But that may have just been my particular test. That one was easier than I was expecting and I passed by a larger measure than I had thought.
I also took social sciences and noticed the same thing. It had an updated user interface. The questions seemed pretty standard though.

I feel like this thread is getting too long.

In summary, 1/2 the catalog was RENEWED with new date ranges. That means that the distribution of topics (X% on this Y% on that) has stayed the same but the questions were probably revised. Result: you can use the same CLEP test prep books.

1/2 the catalog was NOT renewed or extended. No changes. Result: you can still use prep material from the earliest active date. Example, since College Algebra shows 3/1/96-6/30/01; 7/1/01-12/31/06; and 1/1/07-12/31/20 - you can use CLEP test prep books from 1/1/07 till current.

3 exams were given new date ranges AND new distribution of topics (not "extensions" as Modern States has wrongly stated on Facebook at least twice- and let's remember, Modern States is not a College Board partner and their program is not endorsed by College Board- it is in their best interest to continue promoting their prep courses and discounting any changes that may make their product appear obsolete. I'm not worried that they aren't revised - no one is yet, but I'm worried that they are either lying to people or are clueless- which is worse?)

Go back in this thread to see the new breakdown for Bus Law, US History 1, and Human Growth and Development. Due to the new distribution of topics (X% on this Y% on that) you should use updated CLEP test prep material for those exams. It is unlikely that ANYONE has done this - I suspect all prep materials are aligned to the old versions, so if you're taking one of those 3, you have to manually go through your prep and make sure you're hitting everything important. This is not a big deal other than it is noteworthy, and test-takers should be aware of these changes.
