ACE & Aleks say College Algebra & PreCalc are duplicates
#1
Has anyone had ACE & Aleks deny you for both College Algebra (without Trig) and PreCalculus?

Last week, I successfully completed both C.A. & PreCalc (90% & 92% respectively).  When I submitted PreCalc, ACE sent me an email saying PreCalc was denied b/c Aleks considers it a duplicate of College Algebra and Aleks sent me an email saying ACE denied PreCalc b/c ACE considers it a dup of C.A.

Valid through 7/31/18, ACE has approved several Aleks.com math courses including (but not limited to) College Algebra and PreCalculus.  I see no indication or statement on either the ACE or Aleks websites stating College Algebra and PreCalculus from Aleks duplicate each other.  In fact, I know other people on this site have successfully received credit for both.

Has anyone experienced this denial?  I think it's truly ghastly that neither state this anywhere and both are pushing the denial off on the other.  I think they should give me credit for both and I plan to write ACE in a few days to state my position and complaint.  I have notified Aleks that I will do that.  If they had been upfront and honest about it and if I hadn't taken 5 hours of tutoring at a significant price, I may not be so upset.  I'm furious at this point.

I chose Aleks b/c I'm often slow to calculate math problems due to a physical condition that causes me to process slowly on most days.  Taking it again through another venue isn't an option.

Can anyone offer any advise?

Here's the email from Aleks.  I've removed the name of the Aleks rep b/c I did not get her permission to post this.

Dear ---,

We received the below request from ACE to approve your PreCalculus course.

Due to the high level of topic overlap for several ALEKS courses, ACE is limiting some combinations of courses it will accept for credit.

As you have already received credit for College Algebra, your current request falls into this area. The circled courses below are not eligible due to your completion of College Algebra:

Thank you,

Actually, this is stated clearly on the ALEKS website. It is on the page that explains how ACE credit recommendation works with ALEKS. See this link on ALEKS: ACE Credit Courses. Toward the top of the page it lists all the ACE Credit recommended courses along with those that are considered duplicates:
  • College Algebra and College Algebra with Trigonometry
  • College Algebra and PreCalculus
  • College Algebra with Trigonometry and Trigonometry
  • Trigonometry and PreCalculus
  • College Algebra with Trigonometry and PreCalculus
  • Introduction to Statistics and Business Statistics
  • Introduction to Statistics and Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
  • Business Statistics and Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
Just to clarify, I don't think people have received credit for both College Algebra and Precalculus from ALEKS, but they have received evaluations that came in as College Algebra and Precalculus. There is a subtle difference, but the end result is the same.

To get evaluations for both, you just take College Algebra (which you've already completed) and then take Trigonometry. Trig should be pretty easy since you just finished Precalc. If you're attending TESU, they should be evaluated as MAT-121 (College Algebra) and MAT-129 (Precalculus), so you'll end up in the same place. If you're not attending TESU, I don't know if it will work the same.

IMO, I don't think you'll get anywhere complaining. Besides, since you recently completed both in the 90%+ range, you should probably get 70% or better in your initial evaluation for Trig which is all you need for credit. It will be faster to just complete that course than to go through the effort to fight with ALEKS and ACE.

Yeah, I'm not sure why ALEKS started doing this, as it makes zero sense. Since when is College Algebra and precalc the same at any school? None I've seen.

This is new, and I'm not sure what they were thinking, but it's goofy.
