Alternatives to Aleks?
#1
Does anyone have a recommendation as to whether the intermediate level algebra course by straighterline or study.com (or another?) would be the most gentle on a student who has typically done very poorly in math? My niece would rather self study and supplement with a tutor than try another math course at her CC. The math instructors have not been very helpful to her and she failed algebra. The Aleks format of learn what you need as you work through the pie would have been ideal for her.
Thanks!

ALEKS is back available for credit - but only if her school accepts ACE recommended courses. My guess is they may not. But, it can't hurt your niece to go through it and see how she does.

Personally, I did not find ALEKS the best way to learn math - I prefer Khan Academy, as it's video based. And free.

While ALEKS is back, they didn't renew their Int Alg course.

She is thinking of TESU.  As jsd mentioned below, unfortunately, Aleks Intermediate Algebra was not extended.  I did not take the College Mathematics CLEP...does anyone have feedback as to how manageable that one is?
Thanks!

It depends on what her degree is as to what level of math she'll need. If she's going to get a BALS, then she could take any lower-level math and be fine. Study.com has the lowest levels available, I think:

MAT 97: Intro to Mathematical Reasoning (MAT-105)
MAT 102: College Mathematics (MAT-102)
GEOM 101: Intro to Geometry (MAT-260)

The reason I put Geometry in there is because sometimes people who aren't good at Algebra are surprisingly good at Geometry. My daughter is doing geometry now, and said "Finally, math that I'm good at!" She was pleasantly surprised by this.

The good thing about Study.com is that she could start working through any/all of the math courses that she wanted, and end up going with the one that's the easiest for her. She only needs 1 course (and final exam) to get it out of the way.

Good luck to her.
