Another breakdown of education
#1
In the Graduate room,

I listed where an employer had differentiated between one and two year Masters degrees.

Applying somewhere else, they parse it this way:

No acad credentials
1st-6th grade
7th-9th grade
10th-12th grade
High Sch diploma/equivalent
1-2 years college
Over 2 years college
Trade/craft certificate
Professional certificate
Associate degree
Bachelor degree/equivalent
Bachelor deg + 1 yr
Bachelor deg + 2 yr
Master's degree
Master's deg + 1 yr

Master's deg + 2 yr
Educational Specialist
Doctorate, Professional
Doctorate, Academic
Current student
Ed level unknown
3-year diploma
1-2 yr business school

In that order.

What's the equivalent to a Bachelors?  professional vs academic Doctorate? hm

On the doctorate thing, I'm thinking they want to distinguish between something like a PsyD and PhD in Psychology.

Technically a law degree (Juris Doctorate) is a professional doctorate, but they're not the equivalent to an academic doctorate (as much as the ABA wants to claim otherwise)

Equivalent might be someone who has the credits to graduate. I'm waiting for graduation approval now, but I almost had to wait 3 months because of not being able to afford the waiver fee. I can imagine some people waiting for longer because of financial reasons.

It's weird how they have 3-year diploma and 1-2 yr business school at the bottom of the list...
I would have thought those would be in between Over 2 years college and Trade/craft certificate.

I think the Equivalent of a Bachelors would be, a set amount of education/certifications and experience/training.
For example, a few business certifications and an associates degree, along with 10+ years experience in the field.

The doctorates seem to be formatted for Professional or Academic, example - OD/MD, JD for Law, Architecture.
OR an Academic PHD in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or something along those lines that conduct research.

Academic PHD's prepares you to teach in that specialty, Professional Doctorates aids you in that career choice.
Hmm, I wonder how applied doctorates play in this... as there are a few cropping up in searches... I guess they'll be "professional".

I would have interpreted this to mean that the employer wanted to know if you had a partially completed Master's degree. I would not have ever thought of a "one year" degree because the shortest I've ever seen is an accelerated 18-month diploma. BUT, I always assumed that those just gave you two year's worth of work in a condensed time frame.

For what it's worth, my MBA took two full years, including summer vacations. I just had a week off at Christmas and a week at Easter. (Jesuit schools) I technically have two MBA's since two schools granted the diploma - one in English and one in Spanish. However, if an employer wanted me to say how long it took, I would prefer NOT to answer. A Master's in a given topic is a Master's in that topic if the school is RA. If my degree took one year, I would not feel remotely guilty about saying that it's a 2+ year degree. Why? Because that's how long most people take to get this degree. If I were to do it faster, that makes me better and smarter. Just like I wouldn't have an issue saying that my Bachelor's is a 4-year degree even though some people take 5 or 6 years and I did it A LOT faster.

I guess it just annoys me that employers want to get this specific about education instead of focusing on knowledge and experience. This level of categorization would make me question whether I even wanted to work for this type of company. And hell, the smart applicant with a Master's degree might just look elsewhere. Wink

I agree that it is a 2 year degree if it has 30 credits, because 15 in a year is considered full time.

Maybe by 1 year Masters, they meant a grad certificate, which is often two semesters worth.

And the Bachelor's for sure. It's a 4 year degree even if we do it in 1 year.

When I look at this, in this context, I don't see a 1-yr Master's degree or a 2-yr Master's degree - I see Master's degree, Master's degree + 1yr of experience, and Master's degree + 2yrs of experience.  Same with the Bachelor's degree.  The PLUS on these doesn't say "it took this many years to get it", it says "PLUS" something.

Maybe there's some context I'm missing?

I agree with dfrecore. This makes it pretty obvious what they're asking for, unlike the previous screenshot shared.

It's settled. I'm going to get an online J.D. that isn't ABA accredited just so I can put, "Dr. Thorne" on my business card.

I don't actually plan to do that, as it's horribly pretentious, but someone will.
