Is the Edx version also "try before you buy"? Does anyone know, I might have to check them out, the Micromasters and the Masters that they offer, a few of them are $10K or around there for an RA Masters degree.

So I was looking at some of those specializations and it looks like MAYBE a motivated person could get through an entire specialization in a month which could theoretically make it free.

This is a tiny bit off topic, but I rec'd an email from Coursera a couple weeks back, they are ramping up for their degree program launches. At the time, I only checked a few, but they are roughly 1/2 price or better when taken through Coursera instead of the Uni directly. Not super cheap, but in the $15k range which I think is still VERY good.

I like how you can try the courses in a degree for free before paying and committing to the whole program.

Yes, and the reason I see this as a HUGE benefit, is because MANY people don't want to go through the trouble of GRE, entrance exams, sending transcripts, application fees, etc. only to not really even know if they can handle the work- so if you do all that/ pay all that, and drop - ouch! Now you're out the $ and you have a paper trail. With Coursera or edX, no paper trail. No disclosures. No consequences! I was terrified the first time I took a grad class (and was 100% sure I would flunk) so I would have certainly done this route first if it were an option.
Though I didn't flunk, and did go on to earn my master's, when you use a lot of nontraditional undergrad, you miss writing - so unless you're intuitive or a quick learner, it can be a steep learning curve.
I love the programs- I'm going to do a lot more learning and writing about them for the families on my blog, but I'll give them a bit of time to iron out the wrinkles first.

100% yes.

If you go into either MOOC, you can sign up for any course for free. Once you do that, you can start learning for free (note: I noticed a few classes charging silly $8 fees here and there, so there may be more changes coming)
As you learn, you'll get hit with a pop up a few times. It will ask you if you want to switch to a verified/paid certificate.

To do any of the credential programs, you'll have to pay for something. Whether it's the certificate or micromasters, there is a cost because there will be some verification and or proctored exams. In the case of the ASU Global Freshman Academy, you also have to pay ASU a hefty fee, but anytime before you commit and send the money, you can walk away.

As for the new degrees, I'm not yet sure how they fully work. They are all still finishing their fist semester, so it will be interesting to learn more as we go.
