Article bashes Harvard Extension ALM Grad

Harvard started it by directing HES students to make it clear that they're HES students and giving the programs weird degree titles. So, it's really Harvard that doesn't want HES graduates to be mixed up with the rest of Harvard.

Lesson learned. Description of  Degree gained from certain university has to be exact.
.... degree from Harvard is not the same as a ....degree from Harvard extension school.

Similarly: ....degree from Purdue Global is not to be mentioned as... degree from Purdue.

HES is a part of Harvard University, but Purdue Global is a separate institution from the flagship Purdue campus. The Purdue system has multiple independent universities. Technically, Purdue Global is not fully a part of the Purdue system. It's a separate publicly-owned corporation.

Does UCLA extension offer degrees? As far as I know, UPenn, NYU, Columbia, etc. haven't gone out of their way to brand their extension students as different. I also don't think they have earn-your-way admission.

Perhap. As mentioned in here  :
https://blogs.harvard.edu/lamont/2013/09...20or%20ALM.

...This question gets to the heart of the identity issue. Some graduates don’t want to admit they attended the Harvard Extension School ..

... but in the end, it's a bona fide degree from Harvard University. That part doesn't change.

Actually, that's the crux of the matter.  If you read many of these articles bashing Harvard Extension students, the theme is that they don't believe they are "bona fide" Harvard students.  In the real world, perception is sometimes just as important as the truth.

There was a case of Ann Coulter bashing Keith Olbermann because he matriculated into the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, not the School of Arts and Sciences, which she claimed was the "real" Cornell and "only Ivy League school at Cornell."

I think there are some toxic attitudes about Purdue (w. Lafayette) vs. Purdue Northwest, Purdue Ft. Wayne and IUPUI. Once they bought out Kaplan perhaps all the regional campuses unified against the common enemy in Global, lol.  But while the snobbery of W. Lafayette is a thing that exists, you still never really see it come up much in media.

I don't know why Harvard gets more column inches about it. Maybe it's just a bigger, easier target. Maybe just the few people ever who tried to intentionally mislead folks into thinking they went to HC forever tainted all extension School students for eternity and the hatred will last for generations. Maybe it's like a sports team rivalry borne out of an isolated incident where fans don't even remember or know what started the hate - just that they're supposed to hate that team.

I think as sanantone already pointed out, we do know this already -- It's happening by design. Harvard wanted to and went out of their way to distinguish between traditional students and extension students. They'll happily market to prospective students that it has all of the prestige of traditional Harvard, but then make sure that alumni aren't cashing in on that prestige. When the elitism comes from inside the house, it's no surprise that this is the reputation that is picked up on by outsiders.

Purdue Global definitely informs students that they are not graduates of Purdue. They belong to the same alumni association though which is kind of funny. I imagine HES also explains that they're not graduates of the infamous Harvard University.

I can understand the sentiment expressed toward HES - its a liberal arts degree across so many specialisations.

Regardless I would not mind having a post grad degree from HES. For most people Harvard seems out of reach - HES makes Harvard attainable - cost and admissions
