Bridge TEFL - International Diploma in English Language Teaching TESOL ($1,000)

The ASU one absolutely will prepare a person, the material is very deep and the exercises are real world simulations of lesson planning and classroom communication taught by experts in the field.

Exactly. I also have no problem with the price or the fact that they're on Groupon (I'm planning to do the ENEB Master's myself). It's the content. I did one of those cheap Groupons a couple of years ago just to see what it was about. I think I paid $5 or maybe $10 for it. I would be too embarrassed to put it on my resume.

Definitely agree that a Groupon cert/MBA doesn't scream quality, but our issue back then was sifting through fresh uni grads' resumes that sometimes featured elements such as shirtless photos taken in the applicant's rear-view mirror. Teaching experience followed by even these certificates definitely made entry-level applicants stand out, giving at least the suggestion of a focus on professional development.

I can say that the one I did was a so-so supplement to the years of teaching experience I already had at that point, and it absolutely does not prepare you for classroom instruction. Then again, I'd argue that most online-only, non-practicum programs don't. I also saw reviews of some other Groupon certs back then that were bizarrely full of Christian theology in their exercises, so do some due diligence. Either way, I'd still recommend a CELTA/DELTA as a better standard of quality for people who are really looking into international education.

While it may seem weird, it's not really surprising when you consider that TESOL/TEFL is often associated with intercultural studies and missions, a Christian endevaour. You can take TESOL as a major or minor at a large number of accredited Bible colleges. Furthermore, a huge number of international schools (where TESOL graduates teach) were started by missionaries.

Update: I got an email from them that their "Holiday Halloween Specials" are going to expire in 1 day and a few hours. I noticed they have a couple of new courses that have ACE recommendation for credit, some remained the same, others have lost UL or graduate credit. Here's the list of them and the 'double dip kicker'...

ACE Credit: Earn College Credit | Monthly Special: TEFL/TESOL Deals
A) 6 Grad credits (previously 9): Bridge IDELTOnline | Graduate-Level TEFL/TESOL Certification
B) 6 Upper-Level credits still: 120-Hour Online TEFL/TESOL Course - Master Certificate
C) 3 Lower-Level credits each: TEFL Cert | 60 Hour Foundation or Advanced Methods
D) 2 Lower-Level credits (new): TEFL Cert - Young Learners or Teens (young adults)

What caught my eye is the Masters/Doctoral Pathway programs here: TESOL Pathway
An example, ACE offers 6 credits towards their Master and Doctoral program for a double dip!
For $995, you save over $1400 for the Master and over $2000 for the Doctoral program!

rachel83azFor a cheap but good TEFL, I would recommend instead going to Coursera and doing ASU's TEFL certificate. ASU is a legitimate university. These Groupon TEFLs need people to stop giving them legitimacy.

Do you know what the hours are for the ASU TEFL coursera cert? I am ashamed to admit that I also completed a TESOL cert from a groupon? HOWEVER, I do also have a TEFL cert from an actual accredited institute, so I think that cross-cancels my groupon sins. xD. I did them well over a year ago though so I might consider doing another one before applying to jobs, just to refresh my memory a bit. Is the ASU one a 120-hour/180-hour/etc certificate, or how would I list that on my CV?

Thank you all I appreciate it!

An embarrassed groupon user...I am not... I scored a few things off groupon, it's not just for cheap certs but dining out as well... I don't mind using it at all, for "education" I grabbed a TEFL and a TESOL cert from them too, they were better than the 'required freebies' you need to take if you're assigned an institution to teach at some of those East Asian countries, like China/Taiwan and Southeast Asia too, Thailand/Vietnam.

In addition to these, I grabbed the MSI certs, these had the IASSC accreditation for Business/Strategy courses. I don't recommend MSI anymore as they withdrew that accreditation and created their own! I also grabbed the ENEB and UNIDEMA offerings too, 3 each as these are recognized in some EU countries without the need of the Hague stamp of approval. It really depends on what you need/want and if it fits your bill.

There are a couple of good options for TEFL/TESOL certificates on Groupon. Most, of course, are not good. For instance, Global TEFL seems to be pretty legit (as far as non-university TEFL courses go). They have some minor independent accreditation. But their best 250-hour diploma isn't on Groupon. https://globaltefl.uk.com/tefl-courses/c...efl-course

Another good non-university TEFL/TESOL appears to be the TEFL Institute. It costs a bit more than Global TEFL, but less than Bridge. TEFL Institute has a Halloween sale right now, too. https://teflinstitute.com/ The 180 and 300-hour courses are OFQUAL-regulated level-5 diplomas. As an American, I'm not 100% sure what that means, but it appears to be a very good thing.

And, of course, there is ASU's TESOL certification on Coursera. That one appears to be a 150-hour qualification, though there are scant few examples online to confirm. At $50/mo, the ASU certificate can either be one of the cheapest options (assuming you can work through it quickly) or one of the most expensive options (if it takes you 3+ months to complete). From what I can see, the 2 Coursera certificates are automatic and you will get them as soon as you have finished the course(s). The actual 150-hour certificate from ASU takes a few weeks to arrive. IMO, this isn't a huge issue, but it's something to bear in mind if you're left wondering where your "real" certificate is.

If you know that a 150-hour cert is going to be good enough, I would go with ASU. If you're going to need more than that, I would probably go with TEFL Institute or Global TEFL.

I wouldn't go with Bridge, unless you're really wanting the alt-credit. It's way too expensive for an otherwise no-name TEFL certificate.

I have a good relationship with an HR hiring manager of one of the largest online education companies in Asia;  I would implore most to stay clear from spending 1k (or hundreds of dollars) for a TESOL cert. Per my friend, they are the definition of a check box, and the lion's share of the Groupon 150-hour (sub $100) check the box just fine. If you want to stand out, get an English degree at UMPI for $1400. An example of where a TESOL program may be worth it is if they have an excellent job placement program; however, earning a subject degree trumps that for teaching opportunities, so stay with my initial suggestion.

Good points! That's part of why I suggested Global TEFL and the TEFL Institute. If you catch them when on sale, you can get a decent quality certificate for $200-$300. Too many TEFL certification sites price their teachings as if you'll get rich teaching. You won't. You'll be able to live comfortably, depending on the country in which you teach, but you won't make a ton of money.

I still wouldn't recommend most TEFL certs on Groupon, though. (Or most TEFL certs, in general.) Most of them are 100% unregulated or have "self-accreditation", hidden behind a fake accreditation site. This isn't even check-the-box, that's scam and degree-mill territory. I definitely wouldn't try to get a job with one of those certificates. You might not get discovered but, if you do, your reputation will take a huge hit. Not worth it.

This is awesome news. That's why I wanted to add English as a major to my TESU degree. While you can become an English teacher abroad with just about any degree, I've heard of a lot of agencies, programs and consulting agencies do prefer someone with a degree relevant to Education/TESOL/English. I think for practicality it will make my job placement and job search much easier.
