Case Manger – Next Step

Case Manger – Next Step

I just took a position as a Mental Health Case Manager. I thought I might turn to the forum here as see if anyone has some suggestions for my next degree, a degree that would complement the new position. I have had an addiction counselor license for some time and I do volunteer work as a crisis counselor, where I talk openly about suicide, so I am not a novice to the field

Yes, I have spoken to the company about what degree might be helpful to climb the ladder, if I choose to climb, and they did not have a recommendation. I will keep an eye on company handbooks and other posted open positions for future ideas. While the company does not do tuition reimbursement, but they do provide free continuing education through Relias, which I will take full advantage of and pursue vigorously.

I do already have many relevant Spanish propos and will probably do some more too. I am thinking about taking more from the European School of Health (ESHE). I have done their Expert in Management and Prevention of Occupational Health Risks, University Expert in Social Psychology and University Expert in Vision Sciences.

The company has hinted that they might be going to a service which would allow me to use my addiction counselor license with them. So, I see the next degree maybe as a degree that will help me move to the next level of my state counseling license, which would require a United States Accredited Masters in a specific field of study that they consider a Behavioral Science Degree. I have attached a file that outlines the areas that would qualify. So now it is about finding the Masters in that field that would be via distance learning, and very low cost. I will certainly be looking for something that is very low in cost. So if you just started typing Harvard Medical School, just slowly walk away from the keyboard.

UMPI is developing a YourPace CBE MS in Human Services which it hopes to launch in Fall 2027. YourPace graduate tuition is currently $2450 per 8-week session, and it’s frequent enough for a hard grinder to complete an existing master’s in organizational leadership or business in one or two sessions.

Also in the CBE bracket are the Walden Tempo CBE MS in Psychology at $4185 per 3-month session and the Capella FlexPath CBE MS in Psychology at $3075 per 12-week session. Of these two CBE programs generally Walden Tempo has more DegreeForumers who have used, and conventional wisdom to date hints it may be more accelerable than Capella FlexPath.

The University of Phoenix Direct Assessment CBE MS in Psychology at $2749 per 12-week session is also worth a look.

None of the above are generally designed for state counselor licensure, but it looks like this regulatory agency especially is open to a wide range of related master’s.

You really should consider the full MS in Mental Health Counseling, which leads to licensure as an LMHC! I know it is 60 credit hours and will cost more, but you really cannot beat the utility! A quick search should yield a handful of online/hybrid programs.

I do find it interesting that the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board states a degree in nursing is considered a behavioral science degree. Nursing certainly incorporates the behavioral sciences!

While it fails the double 'low cost' barrier, would social work be of interest? You could do case work, do crisis interventions, and more. There's a ton of overlap plus room for extension into other areas as well.

I will share some more information. I am less than a decade before I can retire. I have a US Bachelor in Criminal Justice. I could do any of the degrees listed below, even another in Crimiinal Justice in order to keep the cost low. This is probably my last career degree and after this it will be just degrees that are more for fun, such a low cost propios.

· Addiction/substance use disorders
· Social work
· Psychology
· Sociology
· Criminal Justice
· Clinical Counseling
· Public Health

I might even do some individual courses if there is one here and theire at a low cost, as I may take some month to find the right school. I know it is hard to find the free US graduate level courses, but I am looking at that too
