Course plan help -EC
#1
Hello,
I've just applied to EC for the BS/IT-General degree. I'd like to begin testing right away and postpone enrollment as long as possible($). To that end, I'm trying to develop a testing-road-map based on my "unofficial" evaluation. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm still getting my head around the system. Below is my eval; I'm bringing to the table several brick&mortar credits and an 2003 MCSE. Any advice on where I go from here with clep/dsst/ece/gre?

-Thank you

In particular, I'm interested in how to best satisfy the Arts&Sciences requirements. Can anyone provide some insight into the other 23 A&S credits not bulleted above? Any suggestions for exams in regards to bulk credit?

Hi mjstewie, I don't know what you have already taken, so I would recommend that you be careful not to duplicate courses. Excelsior will not give you credit for duplicate courses. (see Excelsior's downloadable "Guide to Credit by Examination" publication)

(I edited a paragraph that had bad information. I misunderstood part of the original post)

In a nutshell, I think that you may want to take CLEP or DSST exams to satisfy your Humanities, and Soc.Science/History.

Ethics might be a little bit different... it is in the Business Degree Program. Upper-Level Ethics (ECE exam) can go toward additional Upper-Level Business credits, however, I am not familiar with the IT requirements. I don't want to steer you wrong. DSST Ethics will get you lower-level credit.

I needed 1 credit of applied professional too, besides Information Literacy. I took a FEMA course and credit banked it a Frederick Community College for $60. Otherwise, any CLEP or DSST will suffice.

As you try to figure all this out, be sure to ask specific questions. I'm painting this with a broad brush because I don't know the details of your transcripts - and I don't have any knowledge of your particular degree program.

Kiwi Lover, Snazzlefrag, Basket Weaver, and ShotoJuku are better with this kind of stuff than I am... just to name a few. (hint, hint) Although, there are certainly many others who know their stuff and I'm forgetting to acknowlege them. (sorry :o )

Please chime in you guys and gals.

Thank you, auminer49r, for your reply. Looking at the Technology Catalog, there is no mention of UL requirements for the A&S component. The IT Component spells-out that 15 of it's credits must be UL. Anyone know if there is a general rule I'm overlooking about A&S requiring certain UL credits?

As you say, I need to get an idea of what credits I already have. Hopefully EC will give me a list of what they accept from the transcripts I sent (anyone know if they'll do this w/o enrolling?).

Good luck tomorrow!

mjstewie, I'm sorry I misunderstood your original post. I thought that you could only use a few more arts and sciences. I deleted the part of my response about going overboard on credits. That is not the case. You have more options. I apoligize if I mis-led you this morning.:o

Could you make a list of the classes you have already passed? It would be helpful to cross-reference your courses with the course requirements to see what exams can fill the blanks.

Do know how you would like to meet those core requirements?

The attached Word document lists all of the exams available to meet the degree requirements for the Arts & Sciences component of the BS-IT degree. Listed after each requirement is the number of credits needed to meet that specific requirement for the IT degree (e.g. Social Sciences/History requires 9 credits). (Right click on the link and choose "open in new window".)

Based on what you listed from your unofficial evaluation, it appears that you would need 20 additional credits to make up the A&S component (they listed 31 credits needed, of which the Humanities, Ethics, Social Science & History, and two Math requirements total 11 credits). You can use any of the exams listed under Humanities, Social Sciences/History, Natural Science/Math to meet those 20 credits.

In regard to “bulk credit” as you mentioned above, you could earn 6 credits each for CLEP American Literature, CLEP Analyzing & Interpreting Literature, CLEP Humanities and CLEP Social Sciences & History.

The 15 upper level credits that are required apply to the Technology component of your degree plan and not to the Arts & Sciences component, so you don’t have to worry about earning upper level credits in A&S if you don’t want to. Although it appears that you may already have 5 upper level Technology credits, since your unofficial evaluation states you only need 10 upper level credits.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions.

mjstewie,

I just realized that the link to the Word document referenced in the above post wasn't working. Rolleyes You should be able to open it now if you're still interested in viewing it.

JoAnne,
Worked like a charm, thank you. This is good info- looks like I'll be considering American Lit, American Dream, & Humanities Gen to help with those 20 additional credits. I emailed EC to ask about getting a breakdown of my transferable credits. I've a suspicion though that I will be getting student copies of my transcripts and working backwards from the eval.
On the bright side, I knocked out the Network+ today. Add two more UL's the the IT component! (it's one of the few CompTIA exams not listed as "Applied Professional (free elective) credit only")
