I think I'm safe in saying that virtually everyone has seen at least one movie where an asteroid crashes into Earth.  Also, we get little news stories about "near misses" and everyone gets to think about what happened to the dinosaurs, etc.  Well NASA is actually doing an experiment to see if they can substantially alter the trajectory of an asteroid in order to protect the planet.  Introducing DART
