Disappointed (That's Putting it Mildly) and Ready to Quit
#31
Hi KayV,

Just FYI, I know it doesn't look like it from what you've seen, but because the College Mathematics and other exams on my list to take aren't on the evaluation I actually have (or will have) all of the General Education Requirements covered. I also just checked with Straighterline, and according to them the "highest numbered course we offer is 251." They don't offer upper level courses, so I'm pretty much back to PLA on those for now I think.

It doesn't matter what SL calls it, it matters how TESC transcribes it. There are at least 3 SL courses that are UL at TESC....Intro to Religion, Communications.....

TESC doesn't go by ACE recommendations or the codes given by the source. TESC gives UL credit for at least 7 Straighterline courses.

Wowee! I was looking at the textbooks required. Any idea how long these courses typically take to complete? I'm not a terribly fast reader, but have been getting faster with all the studying I've been doing lately. At any rate, if a few of you who have taken these courses could please reply so I get a range I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks bunches.

Student Remarks:
11/26/13 You have received your academic evaluation which is an assessment of your transfer credit. The academic evaluation is a tool which will enable you to make a decision regarding enrollment at Thomas Edison State College. If you have any questions regarding your academic evaluation, please call toll free number 1-888-442-8372.

11/26/13 You submitted a transcript from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts June 1977. The credits from this institution cannot be accepted in direct transfer. The institution did not achieve Regional Accreditation status until 01/01/1983. Also, The Art Institute of Seattle Fall 1989, this institution did not gain Regional Accreditation status until 12/01/99, therefore no credits can be accepted in transfer. Thomas Edison State College will accept credits in transfer from regionally accredited colleges and universities or credits recommended for academic credit by the American Council on Education (ACE), the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) or through the Office for the Assessment of Professional and Workplace Learning (OAPWL). Credit for knowledge acquired through college level coursework completed at all other non-accredited institutions can be assessed through the Portfolio Assessment process at Thomas Edison State College. Credits will be reviewed on a course by course basis through this process. Please visit the College web site to learn more about this method of earning credit at Thomas Edison State College: Prior Learning Assessment.

A more affordable option for completing a portfolio assessment would be Learning Counts. Learning Counts does the same portfolio assessments that are done by most larger schools, and then places the courses you gain credit for on your NCCRS transcript.

Remember, you can't complete a Portfolio Assessment on a course that already has a corresponding credit-by-exam, such as a CLEP.

Lemurian_Spirit Wrote:Hey There,

Many thanks for the TESC link about the FEMA courses. I'd been looking and looking for that. Believe me, I will also ask both COSC (in the chat session later today) about the NA credits before applying. I'll let you know what I find out, though I should probably get some studying done today after the job search, so it might be a bit before I post the results.

Someone from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts contacted me first thing this morning. As with the Art Institute, there is no way to update the credits, though the gentleman was very nice and offered to send a letter to any school I wanted explaining that they were NA-accredited at the time. I'm not sure that will help since TESC already knows that and won't accept the credits, but it was a nice offer anyway.

I just got off the phone with Excesior. Of course, they were very vague and hypothetical without transcripts, however, it appears that the most credits they will accept out of the 30 credits I earned at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts is 15. Also, because they won't accept anything below a C there are two courses I got a D in from the regionally accredited schools (worth 8 credits) that were accepted by TESC (which of course, wouldn't be accepted by Excelsior). So if I go the Excelsior route it seems like I would gain roughly 15 credits and sacrifice 8. What do you think? Is it worth waiting another two weeks to a month for a gain of 7 credits?

I was in the weekly online chat session with COSC earlier, and basically they will accept credit from non-regionally accredited school if the schools were accredited within five years of my attendance (which I have since found out that TESC will accept as well). Since that wasn't the case for me (I attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts six years before they were accredited instead of five--ugh), I would be back to their portfolio program to get credit for those courses. I would have to submit a portfolio for each course, and since most of my courses were worth 2.5 credits I would basically have to use 5 of my credits to gain 3 of theirs. That might be the case at TESC as well, but I'm not sure since I haven't spoken with Todd Sieben in their Portfolio Learning Assessment program yet. However, from what I can tell the COSC portfolio program doesn't seem feasible for me and because they won't accept half my credits (like TESC) there doesn't seem to be an advantage to me if I apply there. What's the difference if I go with a portfolio program at one school or another? Am I missing something? What do you think?

I also spoke with Mary Beth Lynch from TESC's registrar's office. She said that she would get the exams I've taken, as well as the ones I plan to take unofficially added to my evaluation so I can have a better idea of how to proceed with Todd. I confirmed with her that if I go the portfolio route that it's basically a crap shoot and I'm not guaranteed of getting any credits at all. She confirmed that, but I still think it's worth it for Todd Sieben to go over my transcripts before I decide to give the idea up for good.

However, if I take only the exams I planned (please see list above) and use FEMA exams exclusively for my electives, it might be worth a try to go for the portfolio for my 15 upper level credits (though I think it might take 20 of my credits to get 15 of theirs--again, I'm not sure until I speak with Todd Sieben about this). What do you think? Someone mentioned Straighterline courses for the 15 upper level credits. However, I just checked with Straighterline, and according to them the "highest numbered course we offer is 251," so that doesn't help with upper level credits, though I will talk with Todd Sieben about that.

At this point based on what I've found out from COSC and Excelsior today, does anyone out there still think it's worth my applying to either of those schools? If so, please explain why.

Many thanks again one and all,

Lemurian_Spirit

Without answering these (I have a feeling when I finish this thread they've all been answered anyway) I wanted to commend you for getting it into high gear, AND I can tell by the questions you're asking here, that you're going to get this squared away in no time. You're doing it right- planning for a week before doing anything can save you years! Smile
P.S. How 'bout that FEMA? Gotta love it.
P.S.S. The teaching won't count, but it was worth asking.

Natural science is possibly mis-classified. Double check this in your meeting with Todd. Natural science is a natural science course, not humanities.

Wow! What about the textbooks? Were they roughly the same length for each course? Any idea how many pages roughly for each course? Also, are there tests involved in each course (lesson quizzes, module exams, final course exams, etc.)? Sorry, I'm just so new to all this. Thanks bunches for all your help. BTW, on the Straighterline Website it says "Courses typically take 6 weeks to successfully complete." I'm sure your mileage will (and has) varied, but six weeks is too long per course for me. Ideally my goal is to have everything done but the Capstone by March at the very latest (ideally by February, but it depends on when I get another job). Also, if the monthly charge for Straighterline is $99 I'm wondering if the CLEP/DSST route isn't more cost-effective (though I have been getting study books in addition to paying for the tests, but that is also the case with Straighterline, and the monthly fee is more expensive. At any rate, I hope I get this sorted out soon so I can just go into job search/study overdrive.
