English Lit CLEP
#21
Thanks everyone who posted feedback. She had a different version than some but the study suggestions were so helpful. We'll post exam specific later.

My book suggestions are:

Norton's Anthology of English Literature (for reference)
Complete Idiot's guide (not our favorite but good)
Barron's Study Keys English Literature (pretty essential)
English Literature Classics for Christians by Bob Jones (her favorite, had the best of the best seperated by time period)

Thanks again!!!

She suggests only taking this one if you already love to read classics and if you have done well on A&I.

Passed:

American Gov, US History 1, US History 2, Computing, Info Systems, Humanities, Sociology, Art, Western Civ I, Western Civ II, Social Sciences and History, Civil War, Business, Vietnam, A&I Lit, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, American Lit, English Lit, Astronomy, Supervision, 1 FEMA, Total -79

I took the Eng Lit CLEP today and passed with a 65! Thanks to all the great suggestions. Here are the resources that I used:

Barrons 101 Study Key for English Lit - by far the BEST book to use

Shakespeare Sparkguide - good for learning characters and plots, but definitely not necessary

literature Flashcards - someone recommended this website, and they have some nice info.

I purchased the poetry, lit and Shakespeare Sparkcharts, but didn't really use them.

I highly recommend taking the A&I Lit CLEP first, since 50-60% of this test is also A&I, and you will already be familiar with terms, meters, etc.

Here are some of the things you need to know:

Wandering between two worlds, one dead
The other powerless to be born,
With nowhere yet to rest my head
Like these, on earth I wait forlorn. - written by Matthew Arnold

Two Diarists - Pepys and Evelyn, I think

Woman writer born in New Zealand- Katherine Mansfield

Miller's Tale is a Fabilaux

Know that Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, and the sword's name

Know what an alliteration is

Bacon wrote Of Marriage and Single Life

Chaucer is Middle English

"Yahoo"s are from Gulliver's Travels - Jonathon Swift

Uriah Heap is in Dickens

A Thing of Beauty becomes a memory of joy-written by Keats

Goblin Market Author- Christina Rosetti

Put in Order: Joseph Andrews - 1742
Woman in White - 1859
Room with a View - 1908

Quote "But on his brest a bloodie crosse he bore" from the Faerie Queen

Stream of consciousness authors -James Joyce and Virginia Woolf

What is the suject of "Room of One's Own" by Virgina Woolf -History of women and writing

Pre-Raphaelites are 19th Cent poets and painters

Good luck!

Passed with a 69. And absolutely ZERO experience with any British Lit whatsoever.

The suggestions on this board are right on the money.

To be honest, I almost regret the 7 days of intense study. I really think if you did well on A&I you could pass this test off the street.

Also- Idiot's Guide is pretty worthless. UNlike the American Lit Idiot's guide, which is invaluable for that test. I wish that author would have wrote this one.

Yes, the Barron's study keys are a great source. And spark-notes, as always.

But I can't stress enough, that if you are good at A&I you can probably get by this one by doing NOTHING.

In any event, thanks so much for all the generous sharing. This thread was about the ONLY thing of use I could find regarding this test anywhere.

My hat is off to all of you Big Grin

BTW- I just received 18 credits in 2 weeks.

CLEP is a freakin' miracle!

Peace Out

American Lit 74
A&I 72
English Lit 69

BTW- Norton's anthology is another WASTE. Don't bother wasting your money unless you need a 3300 page paperweight.
