General education requirements
#1
Hi All,

I am asking for a friend.

The friend of mine has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering from Asia, and he would like to get a Bachelor's degree in Software development from WGU (he lives in the US now).

Does he have an exemption from general education requirements?

Thanks

Normally, a bachelor's would exempt your friend from gened reqs, but I'm not sure how it would work with a non-US undergrad. I think the best bet is to contact an enrollment counselor and apply(it's free) to find out. If they don't transfer them it's pretty quick to cover those with Sophia and other alt credits.

For WGU, they don't have many general education requirements. I would apply and get email confirmation from WGU to see what courses have been transferred in towards the BS Software Development. Your friend should not enroll until he maxes all his credits transferable from his original Bachelors and the alternative providers we recommend such as Sophia.org/Study.com, etc.

First, your friend needs to apply and have an international evaluation sent to WGU. Then, he needs to see how they brought in that degree; if it comes in as a bachelor's degree, then he's exempt from the GE's. Unfortunately, for that particular degree at WGU, that doesn't get you very far, as only about 27% of the degree is GE (33cr). So, then, the lower division core can mostly be satisfied by an AA in IT. Which your friend does not have. Luckily, those can all be done via ACE credit or Certifications. The major requirements has another 58cr, many of which can also be done via ACE credit or certs.

So, the best bet is to make a spreadsheet of the required courses, show where you can get those credits, and decide which way he wants to do so. He has to take 30cr at WGU, so you just need to figure out which ones to take at WGU and which ones to do elsewhere prior to enrollment.

That is an interesting development!

It looks like each of the 4 ACE recommended Google courses can transfer in as a single class(depending on the degree) and the IBM(ACE) Cybersecurity course can as well. Slightly disappointing that they're not worth more since all 5 of those courses are recommended for 9-12 credits I believe, but still nice to know they're worth something.

It also appears that outlier is listed as a partner as well.
