It's been a loooong time since I earned my degrees and things are very different now so I can't quite remember: At what point can someone get a meeting with an academic counselor from a college and get a specific degree plan (take this not that)? After paying for the registration fee? I've read a lot of posts of people applying to all 3 or 4 schools and seeing who gives them the most credit, but do you actually get specific guidance for future courses at that time?
TIA

Generally once you have applied, you can access academic advising. However, the Big3 (and probably every other school on the planet) are generally unhelpful when it comes to recommending the types of alternative credit we specialize in around here. They will only help you take regular courses which are quite expensive. That's one of the reasons this community exists, to help people map out their own path for much cheaper than the school can help you do.

Ha! So you have some time to plan things out then! Mine are 13.

Agree and I am sooooo grateful you all and this board exist! I would not be able to plan without it/you! By the time mine are 16 yo and can apply they will have completed all of their Gen Eds and have the equivalent of an Associates so I'm hoping at that time to get very specific info on courses going forward. I will say, I have reached out via email several times to COSC and they have answered my specific course questions with the caveat: things can change, this is no guarantee, etc. But the fact that they respond at all (knowing my twins are 13 yo) is encouraging!

Based on Excelsior College's description, it would seem you can start dealing with the academic adviser once you become Matriculated Student Status (see link below), as it's at that point that you and the school know where you stand in your degree program. It wouldn't makes sense to start trying to make an official plan before that.
