Great Review: Rosetta Stone vs. Pimsleur
#1
Since my library always has a long line of people waiting to checkout Pimsleur Latin American Spanish, I tried to look for a used set to purchase cheaply. I came across this review that pretty much summed up my experiences with Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur. She had an excellent point about the translating. Rosetta Stone shows pictures instead of English translations to try to get you past translating. Their theory is that this works well since children learn languages quickly this way. However, adults do not have the same growing and malleable brains as children. It is also terribly inefficient to not take advantage of the language skills adults have already acquired. Anyway, the excellent point that the reviewer made is that you're still translating except with more steps. You see the grass, you think "grass" in English, and then you translate to Spanish. Because adults have already acquired a language, they are automatically going to translate the picture to a word in their native languages before thinking about the word in the new language. Rosetta Stone expects you to see the grass and automatically think "pasto." This is just another reason why you can't expect adults to learn a language like toddlers.

The only thing is that I don't know where she found individual levels of Pimsleur for only $60 each. The website is selling levels 1-4 in a pack for $450. The individual sets are $120 each. I can't even find used copies as cheap as $60 a piece, but I'm going to check eBay. One criticism of Pimsleur that people often have is that it's completely audio. The new CD sets do have booklets that attempt to teach you how to read the language. The DVD sets have interactive lessons and flashcards. But in my opinion, even with the audio alone, Pimsleur is superior to Rosetta Stone.
