HES Poetry - Registration Question
#1
Hi All,

If I don't lose my nerve Blush , I plan to enroll in HES's Poetry in America: Mayflower through Emerson (start date - Sept. 4th). Not happy about the quadruple increase in price or the change in grade allocation for assignments (the essay is now 30% of your final grade), but as the trite saying goes...it is what it is.

One question for those who have taken a HES Poetry course. Is there any advantage to registering early? Do you gain access to assignments, due dates, etc. or any other helpful info not presented in the available syllabus?

I assume they've made the course more difficult to justify the $1000 price tag.

For those interested, here's the new break down in grading -

OLD COURSE                                     NEW COURSE
40% Discussions                                35% Discussions
10% Annotation Workshop                  15% Thesis Paragraph
30% Weekly Quizzes                           20% Weekly Quizzes
20% Essay                                         30% Essay

Thanks so much!

No benefit in registering early. It’s all the same.

You could be half way passed out or high and write the 1,500 words or whatever it is that they want and still get a B.

So don’t stress the difference in grade weight. Modern day college work is mostly all about turning something in.

Wow, I disagree about "halfway passed out" for most classes. Especially if you're doing grad level credit.

Seems like you can see the syllabus here without being logged in: https://canvas.harvard.edu/courses/4336/...s/syllabus

It's a good thing that they added 5% to the thesis statement. Most likely it's much easier to get 100% of that 5% than to get it on the essay. If so, the essay is essentially worth only 3.5-4.5% more, if that makes sense.

35% is still a lot for discussions.

Less weight on the quizzes seems good for many students.

Thanks for the input! I don't do "halfway passed out" mode, either...I'm more "100% effort all the time" Big Grin mode, so I've already been studying the assigned poems, working on essay topics, etc.

I'm nervous even "thinking about attempting" my first grad-level course, and the thesis/essay has always been at the top of my "worry" list. Seeing it now carries more weight, grade-wise, Ughhh!  Blush

You definitely can see the current syllabus for the "Mayflower/Emerson" PIA course without registering. I think the latest version is a bit different from the one you've linked to.

Ah, wow that you're already starting Smile You may want to see my other post about the HES Poetry as well as eriehiker's post or two. Whatever thread he posted in may also have other good posts. (I think I posted in that thread at least once.)

Again, many thanks. I've seen your very helpful Smile  previous posts, along with eriehiker, elbebopkid, and everyone else who commented on the HES PIA courses. Like most adult students, I have work/family responsibilities that take up quite a bit of my time – hence, the desire for advance prep. (And familiarizing myself with the course work and planning out a schedule ahead of time has always helped me feel less intimidated Blush )!

Back to the 74 poems (Yup, I've got them numbered!).

Just a warning that the syllabus for one of the PIA classes that I took in the Spring changed it's syllabus and point distribution halfway through the semester.  Just so that you are aware that things can and will probably change.
