According to The Crimson the black mass that is being held at Harvard is being put on by the Extension School. Personally, I didn't care too much about the black mass thing. However, when I saw that it was the Extension School I was a little more concerned. I'm really not pleased to see the Extension School rocking the boat. Yes, they have their rights, but I strongly suspect the majority of people supporting this black mass are doing to it to purposely act juvenile and not because of minority held religious beliefs.

Could also be a play on skull & bones... If so, it could be seen as one of the largest, most public, hazing rituals of all time? (shrugs)

It's a club at the extension school, not really a sanctioned event per se. Even Drew Faust, the president of Harvard, has expressed displeasure with the event.
I understand the event has now been cancelled.

It's probably not really being started by people with alternative religious views (which should be defended) but it certainly has people talking.

Professor Robichaud, an Extension School lecturer who was scheduled to speak on tolerance at the event posted his words here: https://medium.com/p/ea2c0bae79e5 (my daughter has taken a couple of classes including one in person under this guy, I think she is getting exactly the education expected...while I am confident she doesn't agree with the content of the black mass, the purpose of college is to challenge yourself and hold your convictions up to the light. To inspect and study your bases for belief and understanding. I think this instructor, and the threat of this event, has made my daughter a better person and a stronger Christian...I am not displeased).
