Help with degree plan - Bachelors in Business at Excelsior
#11
gremlinbrawler Wrote:Thanks that's helpful to know. I was reading some other forums and I noticed that some people apply to both and then decide from there where to go based off of how many of their current credits transferred so I might do that.

when you have a lot of pre-existing credits, this is certainly worthwhile. It can be pricey though, and if all one has is a handful of general ed credits, we generally already have a decent understanding of where they will fit.

Is that plan from a long time ago? The BS in Business from Excelsior has a six-hour Capstone, not three.

The Bachelor of Professional Studies in Business and Management has a three-hour Capstone, though.

All right, I know more people tell can tell you about TESU, so I will make an attempt to discuss Excelsior.

First of all, if you haven’t already joined the Peace Officers Association of Georgia as an associate member for $25/ year, you really should. It will allow you to get partner pricing at Excelsior.

Excelsior College | Peace Officers Association of Georgia

Join The POAG | Peace Officers Association of Georgia

Excelsior Partner Pricing

Taking just a 3-hour Capstone

$0 to apply
$1095 Multi-Source enrollment fee
$1230 = $410 x 3 hours tuition
$450 graduation fee
Total $2775

Taking a 6-hour Capstone

$0 to apply
$1095 Multi-Source enrollment fee
$2460 = $410 x 6 hours tuition
$405 graduation fee
Total $3960

Taking 12 hours

$0 to apply
$0 enrollment fee
$4920 = $410 x 12 hours tuition
$130 graduation fee
Total $5050

If you have already applied, that's all right. Just let Excelsior know you have joined; indeed, you have to let them know anyway in order to get the discount.

Regarding your Arts and Sciences requirements:

1. Two excellent and cheaper alternatives to the UExcel English are Straighterline and Tor College Credits English Composition I and II. Tor is also a great source for the Information Literacy requirement.
2. He included Soviet Union and Vietnam War in the plan because they are part of the upper level credits you need. However, there are other ways to get those credits if we move things around a bit. For example, you have already completed the Social Science component with these classes:

Introductory Psychology 3
Introductory Sociology 3
Western Civilization I 3
CLEP Macroeconomics 3
CLEP Microeconomics 3

To make up for those 6 upper level hours, you could replace Soviet Union and Vietnam War with any Arts and Science credits. For example, any two of these:

DSST Ethics in America
UExcel Bioethics
UExcel Abnormal Psychology
UExcel Psychology of Adulthood and Aging
UExcel Juvenile Delinquency
UExcel Research Methods in Psychology
UExcel Social Psychology
UExcel World Conflicts since 1900
UEscel World Population
UExcel Pathophysiology

Those are the cheaper exams. The spendy ones ($450 each) also work:

UExcel Ethics: Theory and Practice
UExcel Foundations of Gerontology
UExcel Abnormal Psychology
UExcel Cultural Diversity
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

After those upper levels, you would need 6 more Arts and Sciences electives. For those you could use ALEKS Beginning and College Algebra if you have taken or will take them in order. This would replace CLEP Western Civ 2 and American History 2.
Beginning Algebra > College Algebra > Precalculus > Stats

Excelsior is picky about order of math classes, so make sure to go in that order.

Not a big deal if you haven't taken them in order though. You could take any of these that you listed as possibilities:
Intro to Educational Psychology
Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
Human Growth and Development
Humanities
Social Sciences and History
Natural Sciences
American Literature
English Literature

DSST
Counseling
Astronomy
World Religions
Lifespan Psych duplicates Human Growth and Development

You could also you any of the upper levels in the previous post.
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

Sometimes the best things in life are free... including advice given here, I think the DIY Degree guy "stole" your templates...
For myself, I "borrowed" from dfrecore. Generally, I wouldn't pay for something I can do myself as it's hard earned money...

For your Business Core courses, you have made a lot of progress already. The business requirements have changed a bit since this plan was made, so here they are based on the latest degree chart. Business now requires 54 hours instead of 45, but don't panic.

Financial Accounting 3 Financial Accounting CLEP
Managerial Accounting 3 Managerial Accounting UExcel
Intro to Business Law 3 Business Law CLEP EARNED
*** NEW: Business Communications 3 UExcel Workplace Communication with Computers
Computers 3 Info Systems CLEP EARNED
Principles of Management 3 Principles of Management CLEP - EARNED
Principles of Marketing 3 Principles of Marketing EARNED
Principles of Finance 3 Principles of Finance DSST
***NEW: International Business 3 Penn Foster International Business, BYU International Business, Adams State Global Business Strategies
***NEW: Business Policy (Capstone) 6 HOURS NOT 3, must be taken at Excelsior

Also, I should say that Excelsior counts Organizational Behavior and Quantitative Analysis as part of Arts and Sciences as well as requirements for the business component. Operations Management is no longer a requirement but you can use it as an upper level elective in business if you'd like. You will need 21 more business credits total. Choose from these that you listed earlier (avoid duplications):

UEXCEL (business courses) :
Business Ethics
Labor Relations
Management
Marketing

TECEP (business) :
Business in Society
Managerial Communications
Marketing Communications
Advertising
BA, MA, EdS, MMT, etc.

You only have 6 hours left. If you take the 3-hour Tor Information Literacy, you will only need one more class which could be anything you would like.

What infuriates me on behalf of the OP is that this guy is USING OUTDATED DEGREE REQUIREMENTS, planning in courses that the OP actively does not want to take, and not mentioning the whole 6-hour Capstone situation.

Imagine thinking you have all but the Capstone done, trying to enroll, and finding out that the requirements have changed like that.

If I were the OP, I would ask for a refund.
