Highschool Homeschool
#1
Hello.

I am the mother of a homeschooled high school student in Georgia. We have been using Sophia to work through courses as an extra oomph. My friend referred me to this page and told me that he could be receiving credit work for college. I'm not sure how accurate this is since he hasn't left high school quite yet. We are 3 years in and he has completed them over the past 3 years so I'm not sure if he had to be enrolled into a college first.

So far he has completed:

-Intro to Business
-US History 1
-US History 2
-Human Biology
-College Algebra
-English Comp 1
-Visual Communications
-Ancient Greek Philosophers
-Art History 1
-Intro to Statistics
-College Readiness
-Approaches to Studying Religion
-Environmental Science
-Intro to Psychology
-Topics in US History

Would love any insight you may have!

That's great! That's up to 42 college credits right there! (College Readiness doesn't transfer to a lot of schools.) Does your kid know what degree he wants? You said he's been doing this for 3 years and he hasn't quite left HS yet, so is he 17/18 or a bit younger?

Hello!
He is 18 going on 19. He was held back in a lower grade. At the start of covid we switched to homeschool. He is a current HS Senior and will graduate in May.
He has interests in nursing and vet tech medicine. Although he is still unsure.

Some possible options:
TESU: Bachelor's in Biology OR an Associate in Biology and a Bachelor's in a "backup" subject.
WGU: Go straight to a nursing degree https://www.wgu.edu/online-nursing-healt...grams.html Downside: it's competency-based, so you can pay significantly more if he's a slower student. Also, most of his credits won't transfer because WGU has almost no gen eds and no electives at all. Almost all courses are major-related.

If he's not completely sure, I would probably choose TESU. If he finds out halfway through Biology II that he actually hates the subject and everything to do with it, he can still get a degree in something else with the credits that he has at the time.

Another option is to take some more courses from Sophia.org towards a BS Health Sciences or Natural Sciences at Excelsior. What your son can do is while he's taking courses that may complete a BS Health Sciences or Natural Sciences degree, he can see if an Associates in Vet Tech from Ashworth or Penn Foster is what he would like... all courses should be transferable to Excelsior as Excelsior takes ACE and NA courses...

While I love collecting inexpensive college credit while in high school, I'm not sure that I'm going to go this route at this time. For a student who may want to be a nurse, I'm always going to advise taking a year or two at the local CC to take those lab sciences, and see how it goes. If, at some point, he definitely wants to become a nurse, then I'd enroll in an RN program. If he decides against it, he can always switch to something else later. But better to figure out the RN options sooner rather than later - those credits will still be sitting there if he does need them later on.

Have him explore the option of becoming a veterinarian.  There’s a growing need for veterinarians as most of those in the field are baby boomers who are retiring.
