Need Help with UMPI English Degree Plan
#1
First of all, this is a great resource. Thank you to everyone!

I'd like to complete a BA in either English or Psychology at UMPI in the shortest time possible and need help with a degree plan. I started to go by this:

https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...egree_Plan

...but realized the English degree there is different now and the requirements look different.

https://online.umpi.edu/degrees/undergra...ournalism/

My details are:

Your Location: California , USA

Your Age: 54

What kind of degree do you want?: BA English

Current Regional Accredited Credits: None (possibly some 20+ year old credits from a junior college that might be transferrable as electives)

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: None

Any certifications or military experience? None

Budget: I'd like to go the quickest/easiest route possible and will consider spending more for it.

Commitments: I currently work full time and can work on my studies in the evenings/weekends.

Dedicated time to study: I can study as much as is needed during the night or weekends. I estimate at least 3 hours each weeknight and on the weekends, maybe 6 hours, so 20 hours or so weekly.

Timeline: Finishing the courses required for the degree as fast as possible is my goal.

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None.

My questions are:

1. From what I read, I'm assuming UMPI would be the easiest/quickest way to go, but is there a better option?

2. I have 15 credits from a junior college in 1991 (media studies and drama). Are those transferrable as electives?

3. Can you help me create a degree plan? It looks like I can do the following:

Sophia: 40 credits (General Education)
Sophia: 34 credits (General Electives)
16 credits which qualify for UMPI requirements
-- Transfer to UMPI --
UMPI: 30 credits (English/Comm requirements)

So I created this spreadsheet with the basics so far:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

4. In the degree plan, which courses are easiest to complete quickly and meet the requirements?

5. Is it a safe assumption that each of the required classes on the UMPI page are 3 credits each?

@sever, Welcome to the board, you did the template and addendum!
I would follow the degree plan you linked, I don't see any issues with it from a quick glance.
Also follow WIKI requirements for the gen eds... https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UM...ts_Roadmap
My answers to your questions below...

1. UMPI is a great option for the BA English, it'll have a concentration in Professional Communication & Journalism
2. If those 15 or so are college credits and not vocational, it should hit the free electives just fine.
3. Yes, Seems like a good plan, I agree... start with Sophia.org courses for the general ed/electives.
4. You start with the Sophia.org gen eds and work your way towards electives and the major.
5. Yes, all courses should be 3 credits unless it's a science with lab, those are 4 credits combined.

This line here, they matter (find out what they are) > Current Regional Accredited Credits: None (possibly some 20+ year old credits from a junior college that might be transferable as electives)

Thanks for the info! I just realized that one of the degree requirements is:

PCJ 396: Field Experience Practicum

And I don't think it wil be possible to do this. I guess there used to be a English degree without the emphasis, but not anymore? So I'm considering switching to this degree:

https://online.umpi.edu/degrees/undergra...nal-minor/

Which means a lot more electives instead and appears to be easier. Thoughts? Also, is there a way to tell on Sophia or Study.com what classes will qualify as electives at UMPI?

Thanks!

This is the UMPI YourPace English degree - https://online.umpi.edu/degrees/undergra...ournalism/

The UMPI YourPace Psychology is brand new (doesn't start until Fall 2023), here is the thread on that - https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...I-YourPace

If your goal is to get a bachelor in any subject (aka the 'check box' bachelor) then the BLS with the Management concentration has been reported as the most likely to be completed in the fewest terms - https://online.umpi.edu/degrees/undergra...ent-minor/

@sever, I agree with what allvia mentioned, your best bet right now is to get a degree completed as a check the box. If you ever wanted to continue on with English or the concentration, you can take additional courses towards another minor and add that to your BLS. You can review the WIKI plans for the UMPI BLS as there are several minors to select from, you can do a couple of minors if you like...

What courses do you have from the community college? What was the name of the school? UMPI will accept pretty much any course with a C- or higher except remedial courses. They may come in as electives, but that means fewer credits to complete! Always a good thing. The BA in English isn't a true English degree such as an English Lit degree. It's a BA in English with a Concentration in Professional Communication and Journalism which which is actually more credits than the Major which is a bit odd. Good catch on the Practicum. I'm not sure how an online student would complete it. It's an odd requirement for a CBE program. That's for sure.
