Is there a trick to have TESC discuss degree plans with you?
#1
I have paid the 75.00 to apply and I have been doing ALEKS and SL classes in the meantime before I enroll. But when I call the advisor line they are so short and abrupt and never want to answer my questions. If they want me to go there you would think they would make time for me! I do plan on enrolling once most of the outside courses are done. Is this normal? Do they have certain restrictions of what they can talk about if your not enrolled? Once the new requirements go into effect will they automatically change the academic evaluations? I was told I had to enroll to see where my classes fall. ??? Does that mean what I'm looking at is inaccurate? This can be so frustrating sometimes.

You are locked into a catalog year (of requirements) for the day you enroll, if you enroll before July 1st then you are in the 2012-2013 catalog year, if not then you get whatever changes they make for the new catalog. As for contacting them, once you are enrolled then you can schedule a 30 minute appointment with an advisor who specializes in your degree type (BA, AAS, etc), right now when you call the advising line they aren't going to offer too much help for two reasons:

1. You are not enrolled and that line is for enrolled students
2. The person you get may not be familiar with your degree, they may be a specialist in a specific area

For most any school I've seen (including TESC), you speak with admissions until you are enrolled and they aren't as helpful since they haven't gotten the big payment for enrollment yet. The $75 application fee gives you a starting point for a degree plan, if you wish to move things around or feel that something doesn't match up then after enrollment you can work with them to change things.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

If you have any issues with your initial evaluation you have a 30 day window to make a formal written appeal to clear these up. TESC will talk to you about these issues. I had several courses upgraded and one credit-by-exam (CBE) that had been overlooked. When I worked these issues with TESC Admissions, I was pretty savvy about my outstanding degree course reqs so I was able to get related info at the same time. I also got info from the PLA coordinator to make sure I could finish critical reqs with this method for my intended degree before I enrolled.

In my experience, TESC doesn't talk to you much between the time the evaluation is complete and the time you enroll...I guess they don't want to waste resources on someone who's just "testing the waters." YMMV

You're not enrolled, so you're a browser. They have about 19,000 enrolled students, I can't imagine the number of applied/not enrolled they have. I wouldn't take it personally, but they are likely just not able to give attention to everyone. (they only have 5-6 advisors, how do they handle all students? LOL That's a trick question) Anyway, you should be able to get your answers here, this group has collectively completed nearly every degree at TESC.

Thanks so much for all the info.... I wasn't sure if I was calling the wrong place and that was why they were like that... or what was going on.

Thanks for the learners support number! Very helpful.... I will try that in the future..
