Made a mistake in regards to AAS Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies
#1
I submitted all my FEMA credits in advance. I got an Associate and I am working still on my bachelor.

When I asked if I could get the AAS Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies, I was told that
I would need 12 new credits (reviewed the Catalog and it says the same). Is there a way to fill out
the concentration courses for this degree with others that are not from FEMA (I think I have used
up all FEMA). Any advice or suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

I don't know the answer to this for sure.

There are 3 credits for sure avaiable through the National Fire Academy, might be as much as 6 (you would have to cull through some old posts....look for posts by rickyjoe.

I think you could also make the case for including substance abuse and criminal justice from DSST, but of course those would be $100 or so each.

Do you have any technical certs or licenses that TESC might count? FEMA, Police Academy, Armed Forces, Professional licenses like firefighter, hazwoper, EMT? Those would be possible options for credit.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

One suggestion, one question. Check the list of FEMAs accepted by TESC. Who knows? There might be twelve more out there for you. Is there a particular reason that you want the AAS Environmental, Safety & Security Technologies? While I plan to get it on my way to my bachelors, it's only because it's low-hangng fruit. I don't see it helping me with my career.

I agree. It's not a very important or helpful degree for most. Many just get it because it's practically free and easy to do with FEMAs. Law Enforcement and Intro to Criminal Justice do fit into the area of study. IIRC, an environmental science course I had taken would have gone in there if I hadn't done 5 FEMAs. So, you might want to ask an advisor whether other science exams/courses will fulfill the area of study. I do remember seeing on my evaluation that some computer science/information technology courses could go in there too. There is the Intro to Computing DSST or the Information Systems and Computer Applications CLEP (these duplicate each other) and the Management Information Systems DSST.

It is flexible, but you'll have to schedule an appointment with someone from that degree area. Here is my AAS area of study, hopefully it gives you some ideas.

You can ask them to approve courses from the areas mentioned in the evaluation ("Courses from COP COS CAP CIS derived from occupational training are applicable") or you can take the route I did and look elsewhere. You probably don't have the workplace training credits but you can find courses related to Environmental Science, Workplace Safety, or as they recommend Computer Security, and you should be able to recommend a few courses to get you to the twelve credits. The key is to work with someone who specializes in the degree so make an appointment instead of just calling and you'll probably be able to get them to give you some ideas. This is another good reminder for anyone else reading this, make sure you don't submit credits out of sequence or you may lose out on a second degree.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Here is what I used. After I had already used 9 FEMA for my AA and a BA. Criminal Justice is a Straighterline but also a DSST. I was also told I could use Intro to Law Enforcement.
