Modern States CLEP Voucher
#21
If I finish a modern states course & go on to take the CLEP but fail it (get a score under 50) will modern states still give me a voucher or will I have to pay out of pocket for the exam?

The voucher comes before the exam, and you use it online when you sign up for the CLEP exam.

For CLEP exams and using ModernStates, the material for most courses are not sufficient to pass, I usually recommend working with other material or sources, such as a textbook from the library you can borrow for free or some study guides on that one course. For testing, you get the voucher from ModernStates and you also get your testing fee reimbursed (the testing center closest to me charges $40/test, everything adds up and if you take many - instant savings basically by using Modern States)

There’s an option on the voucher form to tick the box if it’s a retake. I don’t know if that means they’ll give you two, or if it’s just free for your first exam for that test with them.

Is it? For CLEP, I thought the pass mark was equivalent to a 70 (C-). I'm not sure, but I believe many schools will consider a low pass to be like a C/C-.

I believe a 50 on a CLEP is benchmarked to a 70 in an ordinary class. I've experienced the same thing with CLEPs. During the test, I feel like I'm going to fail, and then I end up with a 60+.

MS has been great. I've completed 4 courses so far and I've got vouchers for 2 more that I won't be taking until after this Summer semester is over. I just got my first reimbursement check from them as well. Their original program announcement said they would be offering 10,000 vouchers, and my last voucher was number 62xx, so they probably have a while before they run out of vouchers.

They say somewhere in the College Board info that you get a point for every correct answer and then they do some sort of secret scoring thing to come up with the final score. It sounded like grading on a curve but I don’t know that to be fact. I had 100 questions on my Info Sys test recently, highest score on any CLEP is supposed to be 80. I scored 72. Passing for most tests, according to College Board, is 50 (there’s a few that are higher, like foreign languages). BUT it’s up to your college to decide what they’ll accept. For instance, UT Dallas only gives credit for 60+, which makes sense, since they only give credit for 4-5 AP test scores. So 60’s =AP 4 or a B; 70-80=AP 5 or A in the course. 50 would be a C to them. No bueno.

Always check with your target college! Smile And some colleges only accept certain CLEPS.

They will let you get a second voucher. I had that concern as well, but a friend of the family was able to get a second voucher to retake an exam he failed.
