New ASU ULC: CIS 308: Advanced Excel in Business
#61
(01-27-2022, 10:25 PM)bluebooger Wrote: if you're asking about the course on page one, thread one
the pdf says

● Calculate with advanced functions and formulas.

I'm guessing that's "if", "countif", sumif"
it is easy stuff
there are plenty of good websites for those

https://www.contextures.com/xlfunctions04.html

https://exceljet.net/formulas

● Organize worksheet, workbook and table data using a variety of techniques.

maybe that's dropdown lists and filters ?
https://www.contextures.com/exceldynamic...dlist.html

● Create and modify charts and graphs.

easy stuff
tons of videos on youtue

● Customize and enhance workbooks using graphic objects and data tools.

using charts and graphs with with filters, slicers and timelines ?
again, easy stuff

● Understand how businesses can utilize advanced spreadsheet analytical techniques using pivot tables, v-lookups, amortization and graphical data to better understand their business and customers.

do you know how make pivot tables do percentages and averages ?
do you know how to rearrange the rows and columns in a pivot so you can see the data you want in an ez to understand way ?

● Manipulate and analyze data to make appropriate recommendations for managerial decision making.

same as above, but maybe also give some ideas what to do with outliers and #N/A data (should you include those in your averages or not)

● Deploy advanced techniques to increase productivity and improve efficiency by streamlining workflow.

I can't deploy anything
ALL excel spreadhseets with vba code in them is locked out by the anti-virus software and hospital security settings
All ability to connect to SQL Server is locked out for the same reason

I can write my own stuff and make my charts and pivot tables, but then I have to save it to non-macro workbooks with all connections disabled

but that's what it probably means -- real time interactive dashboards that connect to one or more data sources and run vba code to update charts -- none of which I'm allowed to create and give to other people

I don't know how much this course costs, but you can figure out how to do almost anything on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD9e-gQCQsE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8g9DK5noi1s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOIEeUHyye0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9_COxQ-_8E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2C_-6PW6WE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnCvn6CmP2k

and on the mr excel forums https://www.mrexcel.com/board/forums/exc...stions.10/

and just try stuff out -- record a macro and then edit the vba by hand
step though it with the debugger and see what's going on

I am enrolled in wgu and did learn some stuff from the spreadsheets course, but i would never pay for an excel course - not even an inexpensive one on sale at udemy
i only did the excel course at wgu because its required
This was helpful. Thank you.

This transferred to TESU as CIS-399 Special Topics in Computer Info Sys. They didn't classify it as a spreadsheet course as some people feared. It went into the CIS AoS electives in my BSBA-CIS on the 20-21 catalog
TESU Class of 2024 BSBA-CIS+GM, BSIT, ASNSM-CS+Math, AAS-GEN
Earned credits from Sophia, SDC, ASU ULC, TEEX, Microsoft, Strayer, TESU, Saylor, DSST, CLEP, CompTIA, StraighterLine, and others since starting in April 2020

That's awesome, it's a great course to add into the CIS AOS and will count towards the RA requirements as well! If only they offered the $25 registration and the $99/course tuition fee again, I'll be all over those CIS and other offerings at ASU (EA) Universal Learner...

For example, it is being offered in March for enrolled and visiting students (i.e., full tuition).

Class search: https://webapp4.asu.edu/catalog/course?s...RT&r=35458

This is no longer the case. It seems that making all the courses available via the EA/UL program was deliberate:

https://ea.asu.edu/partners/abda/

It is now a standalone program that students are supposed to complete via EA/UL.

--

Side note: something interesting - aside from the certificate, the six courses give you 18 ASU credits for $2,550 that can be reused at ASU toward a bachelor's. The five courses through the undergraduate 100 Milllion learners program will give another 15 credits for free. ASU has a transfer credit limit of 64, of which 60 can be CLEPS/DSSTs (equivalency tables here). For a 120 credit degree, 97/120 isn't bad and that is before you take any other EA/UL classes.

If the 100 Milllion learners program or certificate program courses satisfy upper-level requirements, maybe in a business-related program, someone could also technically take more EA/UL classes to pad their Gen Eds/electives with ASU courses - since they shouldn't count toward that 64 credit transfer limit. The only rule I can find is that CLEPs/DSSTs cannot be used for the lab science requirements or the info lit. So you would need to use the 3 hypothetical EA/UL classes to cover those.

Tbh, I would be interested to see just how far the remaining courses could be kicked down to, though obviously, it is degree-dependent.

Just as an example though, there are 8 classes in their online business major that are a) mandatory, and b) aren't just "Upper Level Business Elective" or "Lower Level Business Elective" (see starred courses here). Of those, 3 look like they should be covered by classes in the 100 Million Learners certificate. This leaves 5 mandatory courses.

Completing the business analytics certificate, plus the 100 Million Learners intermediate track, plus 3 other EA/UL classes, and using Modern States would give you 106-8 ish credits (depending on if you did 3 or 4 credit EA/UL courses) for $3,825-ish.

That leaves the mandatory 15 credits/5 classes for the major. One semester for an online, out-of-state student is $8,000 or $4000-ish if they're eligible for Pell. $4,000 plus the EA/UL fees for an ASU degree isn't bad at all if you're Pell-eligible, and brings in the total cost for an ASU degree under $10k. Still not the cheapest going, but much more reasonable. Someone should try it and report back Wink

Important notes

1. For credit by examination, the order in which you take classes vs. exams will matter: https://catalog.asu.edu/credit_exam

Quote:
  • Credit will not be granted for a course taken at an educational institution after credit by examination has been awarded.
  • Credit may not be received for a lower-level or prerequisite course when credit has already been received in a higher-level course within the same field.

2. Residency requirement is met by the plan described above: https://catalog.asu.edu/ug_grad_req

Quote:Resident credit refers to a course that is offered in a regular semester or summer session. Credit earned through comprehensive examinations also is included when calculating ASU resident hours. Credit earned through independent learning, Advanced Placement testing, the College-Level Examination Program or an International Baccalaureate exam are excluded when calculating ASU resident hours.

Every candidate for an undergraduate degree is required to earn a minimum of 30 credit hours in resident-credit courses at ASU.

Keep in mind that ASU doesn't accept every single CLEP/DSST and many are just accepted as electives. Also keep in mind that many of the tests that are accepted overlap with ASU EA classes and that many ASU major maps don't have much room for general electives.
