New BS in AI Engineering
#1
It appears they’ve introduced a new degree offering that may interest some here. The curriculum is notably more math-intensive than other WGU programs, even the CS degree. Seems like an interesting option for anyone interested in this realm. The first cohort starts in July.

(WGU’s Bachelor of Science in AI Engineering is built to help you do both.

This online artificial intelligence engineering degree goes beyond theory, teaching you how to apply AI in real-world environments. You’ll learn how to build AI-enabled applications, deploy models into production, and manage the systems that keep them running at scale.
Instead of focusing on isolated experiments or concepts, this program is centered on how AI actually works in practice—inside software, systems, and infrastructure. By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to contribute to AI projects where the goal isn’t just understanding the technology but putting it to work.

You’ll Learn How To:
  • Design and deploy AI and machine learning systems
  • Integrate AI into real-world applications
  • Build scalable AI infrastructure and pipelines
  • Automate workflows and optimize performance
  • Apply ethical AI and governance principles
  • Work across software, data, and cloud environments)

This new program is much heavier than the CS program in terms of math, primarily because of the Calculus I, II, and III requirements.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Calculus II & III and Linear Algebra are labeled “for Engineers” on the program guide, different from the similarly named courses offered in the mathematics education degree. I suspect these courses could later be incorporated into the rumored Electrical Engineering degree as well, if it ever comes to fruition. It’s interesting to see WGU expanding into new areas.

I'd guess they'll go for ABET accreditation for the AI degree like they did for the CS degree.

No differential equations? That will surely be required for electrical engineering programs.

I’d imagine it would be created if the EE degree ever materializes. It would likely become the most math-intensive program offered at WGU. The online EE degree from ASU includes differential equations, so WGU would probably need to include it as well to stay aligned with standard engineering curricula. The existing courses of Calculus I through III and Linear Algebra already closely mirror the math foundation in ASU’s program.

or they could go the excelsior route for
ABET accredited electrical engineering technology

This is a really cool program, and I encourage anyone who is interested in it to do the program. I am curious about what courses could be knocked out by completing some of the Coursera Professional Certs? Recently, they have been adding more and more certs that cover AI and ML.
