I have quite a few of the older edition 'REA' CLEP test prep books (black and white background with CLEP in yellow). I'm wondering if it's worth my while to buy the newer editions. Probably depends on the specific test?

Very much depends on the specific test. Anything that's been updated should probably be replaced, but even at that I'd look into checking them out from a library (whether local or interlibrary loan) as opposed to buying them new.

If you have a chance to look at the newer version side-by-side with your version, that would be the best.
I have an ancient REA book for Analyzing and Interpreting Lit (It is purple, published in 1996). I compared it to the current REA book (light blue and white, published in 2012). Two differences: First, the newer book has a section on writing the optional essay. I wasn't going to take the essay portion, so that was fine with me. Second, the newer book had only two practice tests while my older book has three. Also, the older book doesn't have the online version of the tests. Other than that, the books were IDENTICAL, and I checked thoroughly.
So I actually found my older book to be better for me.

It's easy to find out what age of REA book is acceptable. Go into the ACE catalog
ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training and check the current exam version. An exam that is valid from 2015-2018 means you'd be best prepared using a book 2015 or newer. Some exams, like biology, haven't changed since 2001 so an older book is fine.

Thanks for the replies! Just now getting back over here. Looks like I'll be updating with some newer versions, and, of course, subscribing to IC's study guides.
