Calculus as a Prereq
#1
I have an opportunity to take a calculus course. I already have math credits in pre-calc. I am thinking of pursuing a career in either genetic counseling, occupational therapy, speech, or special ed. Would the calculus course be a prereq for any of these courses?

You need to figure out exactly what degree you would need to get and check with your specific school. It would certainly not be surprising to need Calculus for any sort of science bachelor's, like biology. If it helps, I found Calculus to be a very rewarding course. BTW, it really nailed down my algebra and trig skills, too.

So for a science ba it may be necessary, but for the special ed it probably would not be?

I wouldn't think so, but what you really need to do is map out the degrees you would need for each of those career choices. Some of them may require a master's, for example. Then check the degree requirements at the schools you would be likely to get your degree from. Working from generalizations is really not the way to go.

While mapping out your degree requirements, don't forget to also consider graduate school requirements. Although your Bachelors may not require calculus, some graduate programs may have it as a prereq.

I always advise to go as far as you can with math, especially while it's still fresh. So if you've recently taken precalc (last year or two), you should see if you can get through calculus as well. It certainly can't hurt.
