One source for exam study guides?
#1
Greetings,

A newbie to the forum and the path of credit by exam.

Wondering if anyone can give a "rule of thumb" regarding CLEP/DANTE/etc. books publishers.

In otherwords, being a simple creature, I really do not care to research study guides for every single exam. I would much prefer to simply get my study guides from one place, ie. REA, Peterson, etc.

That said, does any one have opinions on one publisher over another? Obviously, it would be nice to find consistent material.

For my path, I have 11 CLEPS and 13 Dantes to do.

Suggestions?
Thanks
John Foy

Hi John - Welcome to the IC Group!!

In essence IC is about as "simple" as you put it in terms of one stop shopping for most if not all of your exam needs.

However, when trying to apply that same formula to other study sources you will probably best be able to find some reviews and such for many of them either through Amazon, by reviewing some of the specific topic threads here, or start a new one. Each book can be as varied as the exam itself and some come closer to the target than others.

One thing is certain though - you CANNOT go wrong with using IC as your primary source of study material.

John,

Welcome to the board.

The most commonly used study guides that you might see mentioned around here are: REA, COMEX, Cliff's, Rudman's, Official DSST Study Guide, and Official CLEP Study Guide.

Unfortunately, no single publisher puts out books for EVERY exam. In addition, one publisher may have a better guide than their competitor for one exam, but not be as good for another exam. So, you SHOULD end up with a mix of books from each publisher by the time you are done (if you know what's good for you).

Instantcert is EXCELLENT for MANY exams and could be all you need for quite a few exams. This board will help you determine those exams for which Instantcert alone is usually sufficient.

Since you will be taking many DANTES and CLEP Exams, I would HIGHLY recommend that you purchase both Official Study Guides. This is because each one covers several exams in one book (See note below for free downloads).

Official DSST Study Guide ($12.95):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...ce&s=books

CLEP Official Study Guide ($15.95):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...ce&s=books

Free Downloads:

If you prefer, you can also download the Official DSST Study Guide and another good book, Peterson's CLEP Success, (free of charge) here:
http://www.petersons.com/airforce/books.asp

The Official CLEP Study Guide is available for free download here (Chapter by Chapter):
http://www.inarng.org/Education/education.htm

These books will be invaluable to you as you progress in your studies!

Individual Exam Books:

For each individual exam, you may also wish to purchase an REA, COMEX, Cliff's, or Rudman's book to supplement your learning. Read this board, or ask us, if you want pointers about which book is best for a particular exam.

Free Mock Exams:

In addition, online mock exams are available for many of the CLEP exams (free if you register):
http://www.petersons.com/cpc/testprep.as...893&tab=ap

You will also want to check out the free DANTES factsheet for each individual exam here (each Factsheet contains a breakdown of the exam and a handful of sample questions):
http://www.getcollegecredit.com/04learne...factsheets

Internet Resources:

Finally, there are numerous free online web sites which provide study material for the various exams (read the board or ask us for details).

The above information is more than enough to get you started on your journey. We're here if you need additional help or support.

Study hard and you will do well,

Thanks for the responses.

While I have subscribed to IC, I always like an alternative approach to tweak the thought process.

Guess I'm out of luck though on a one-stop solution. Oh well.

Thanks again,
John Foy

Start with IC. Each exam may have a study guide that is better from one supplier than the next. I like Comex. REA is good but a bit long. Petersons practice exams are awesome and will give you a good sample of what your actual exam out come will look like.

Most important is to ask at this forum in advance and people love to give advice.

Try going via this link, it won't require a code.
