Online school. Has it come into it's own?
#31
I knew about Mitchell Hamline and Syracuse, but Dayton is new to me. Pretty interesting how this is developing, the online programs all popped up within the past 3 years. The ABA had been resisting them for years.

Mitchell Hamline says that it has generous financial aid. For anyone who is interested in these hybrid programs, I'd apply to all three and see which one will end up being the cheapest.

Mitchell Hamline also appears to be more flexible. Syracuse and Dayton emphasize synchronous courses. However, Syracuse requires the fewest campus visits.

This is a research paper analysing the results of proctored v/s non proctored exams. Quite an interesting read. It kind of shows that online education is growing popular.

"Furthermore, 90% of online students were found to read the required text compared to just 60% of their classroom counterparts, who apparently were waiting on their instructors to “feed” the information to them. Overall, the authors found that students in their sample earned higher grades, believed they learned more, thought exams were easier, spent more time on classes, found the text more useful, and perceived classes to be of higher quality, but overall they saw classes as harder in the online learning environment (Hannay & Newvine, 2006)."

That was my favorite part part too. But somehow, towards the end, their inferences seem to change. They begin to posit things like may be students don’t do well on proctored exams bcos they do not have access to notes, find it nerve racking to be watched etc. Of course, they are just exploring all probabilities. But it gives an impression as though online exams are dubious. I know from personal experience how hard I have worked for online exams; and I know the same is true of others on this forum.

Not sure if you noticed, but that survey is from 2006.  I'm not sure we can use that to infer anything about online courses in 2019.  It's 12 years old at least.

Well, it has featured in the Online Learning Journal in 2018. The paper has been authored in 2018. Wonder why and how the authors used a 12-year old survey in their paper.

It's a low-impact journal. A journal with a higher impact score likely wouldn't have published this paper. Sometimes, it's fine to publish studies using old data. In this case, due to the rapid changes in online education, it's probably not appropriate.
